Public health is a major factor within our society that our government helps to regulate. With every governmentally regulated organization, there are many controversial topics. One area of public health that has many different controversial opinions is highway safety – particularly the usage of cellphones while driving. The general public is pretty torn over the topic, “with public support [at] around 50 percent” (5). For many people, they feel as though the usage of a cell phone while driving should be their own choice, and present many arguments as to how having the ability of using a cell phone while driving improves their daily lives. One benefit that has been presented is helping to diminish the tendency to speed while running late. It is argued that if a person is running late, and they have the ability to contact their work, or the person in which they are supposed to be meeting to explain that they will be late, it helps to relieve their desire to speed to their …show more content…

According to The National Safety Council, using a cell phone while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes every year (5). That is more than a fourth of all of the traffic wrecks every year. It is also said, that texting while driving makes you six-times more likely to be in an automobile accident than driving while intoxicated (6). More than 3,300 people are killed, and 421,000 injured in the United States by distracted driving in 2012, with the leading distraction being cell phone usage (7). It’s hard to imagine one of those people being a friend, a family member, or even yourself, but for supporters of bans against cell phone usage while driving, it isn’t.
