Carding continues to be a controversial subject of discussion. It becomes into question and becomes problematic when a certain population in society is over-represented in street checking practices. It also continues to cause tension relations between law enforcement and black communities. In this paper I will critically analyzed an article, “Controversial ‘carding’ practice is an invaluable source of intelligence for police, if done right” (2015) by Christie Blatchford from the National Post. I argue that carding is the new form of ‘racial profiling’ by police and it is connected to the intersection of race, gender and class that are filtered through political, social and economic oppression of black identity. Furthermore, Grewal reveals, “Black people made up 9% of Brampton and Mississauga’s population, but accounted for 21% of police street check. While Whites made of 41% of the population and accounted for 28% of the street checks”. This data analysis again reveals significant disparities in the way in which Blacks and Whites are treated by law enforcement officers. The data shows an excessive number of Blacks were stop and checked. According to Bob Mullaly (2010), the oppression of minorities happens because it favors the ruling group, in society.
