Ryan Bader Mrs. Soenksen English 9-Period 4 22 April 2014 Nuclear Energy The use of nuclear energy is a gift to us given by the brilliance of wanting a new way of producing power that is renewable and efficient and isn’t as bad at producing pollution as coal or oil Ronald Reagan once said that “All the waste in a year from a nuclear power plant can be stored under a desk.” there are many dangers to messing with atoms and using fission technologies that are used inside a nuclear reactor the atoms are completely split into 2 atoms this is a dangerous thing to do that can end up with a high price tag in damages. These coming years we will be put into a new generation of nuclear power from the development of a nuclear reactor that uses a particle accelerator beam for efficiency all the way to decreasing the amount of waste a nuclear reactor creates, but that doesn’t answer the question everyone seems to ask. Do the dangers outweigh the positive uses of nuclear energy, why should we continue to use them they are costly and are dangerous. The statement made is true they are highly pricey and are extremely dangerous. No reactors have been ordered since 1978 and even in 1973 there were over 100 reactors that were cancelled. There is a reason why no nuclear reactors have been ordered for the past 30+ years but its not only cause of the dangers of nuclear fission but the cost, in 2007 multiple orders were issued for new nuclear reactors and nuclear plants. But even though these new generation of nuclear reactors have been ordered most of them will not be created or completed because of the cost of a single nuclear reactor. but was it only the cost or was it because of the dangers of radiation and how the public is scared and doesn’t want ... ... middle of paper ... ...s which are residents of the power plant and do constant safety checks and makes sure that workers are working to full capacity with all these precautions studies show that for the U.S. every 100 years there may be a small meltdown thats controllable as a comparison 1 Three Mile Island every 100 years and for a Major Meltdown once every 1000 years as a comparison for that 1 Chernobyl every thousand years. With all this in mind why should we not continue to use nuclear energy? They are as safe as a coal powered plant and generate more energy per kilowatt hour, though more expensive they generate more energy and they are an advancement for power that can be used for many more hundreds of years and will continue to advance and become more powerful more safe but we can’t make them more safe if we don’t use them at all. So, should we continue to use Nuclear Energy?
