The current political event I chose to write about and analyze is illegal immigration. Illegal immigration has been a topic of debate for quite a while in the United States. In 2010, there was a high estimate of over 30 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. (The Political Guide, 2007). There is no wonder this is such a huge issue. There are some who say that illegal immigrants should be granted asylum, while others say that the borders should remain closed to them until the immigrants can gain legal citizenship. In this essay, I will research illegal immigration in an attempt to bring better understanding to the issue.
First of all, why is illegal immigration such a big deal? One concern is the negative effect it has on the economy. An illegal immigrant doesn’t have the documents needed to work in the United States. Sometimes the aliens even create false documents and make fake ID’s (Immigration Issues, 2013). Debates are useful because they compare and argue key points. Debating brings to light ideas and strategies one might not have thought of on their own. A series of questions in the textbook, Govt 6 laid a great groundwork for debate. One question asked was “Should we encourage immigration?”(Sidlow, Henschen, 2014). Everyone living in the United States, with the exception of Native Americans, were all immigrants once (Sidlow, Henschen, 2014 p 15). Another way of looking at this situation is objectively.
