1. SUMMARY In the US, approximately 80 million homes are estimated to possess up to 223 million guns. Though some consider that the laws are adequate, but they are also those that feel otherwise. The debates on gun control have heated up in the US due to rising number of incidences related to mass shootings. Those who would like to see more limitations on gun control and gun possession have been citing various factors that are related to rising occurrences of gun related mortality; association of guns with authoritarianism and rising incidences of domestic violence. There are also those groups that are against gun control argue the following points. According to them, if the victims are armed then they will be able to protect themselves. These groups also refer to the second Amendment of the bill of rights, which has made the possession of guns legal for private citizens. It is also claimed that that guns are necessary for individuals or citizens to possess guns to protect themselves from the government. The NRA (National Rifle Association) is strongly against gun control laws in the US and has increasingly sighted the Second amendment of the bill of rights which has given US citizens the right to own arms. The “December 14th Tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School” has been one of the main reasons for the resurgence of heated debates on gun control. 2. LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1. It is a known fact that criminals will always find ways to gain illegal possession of weapons because for them the law means nothing. With regard to Federal laws and policies, it is crucial for them to be upheld effectively and help law makers curb illegal purchase of firearms. Both sides have pleaded their case openly, defending their claims of gun control and, which is better for the American public. At this current junction it is not clear if a compromise over the issue will be reached anytime soon. Current measures proposed by the US President, such as increased funding for patients with mental illness and background checks will go a long way in addressing events of senseless shooting. If the rights of owning a gun are taken away, this will only make firearms more valuable and people more vulnerable against attackers.
