Disability is a condition that billions of people deal with in their daily life. Disabilities can range from physical to mental and can be observed in an abundance of ways. Some are obvious and apparent but some are invisible to the naked eye. Knowledge on disability seems to be lacking in this day and age, including how to deal with and talk about them. People seem to be unsure of just how varied disabilities are and just how many people deal with them. There also seems to be a stigma with disabilities that frankly, there is no need for. Just because it is not seen by an outsider, the person dealing with it still has to overcome whatever limits have followed. The first part of the stigma start with people saying things like “get over it” with mental illnesses or “push through it” with certain diseases or “some people have it worse” with certain physical disabilities and that simply needs to end. For some people pushing through it may work and some people may believe they have it worse but life is all relative to the person experiencing it. What may be arduous to one could be effortless to another but, that doesn’t mean that pain or that limit doesn’t exist for the experiencer. The second part of this stigma is believing that a person with a disability is incapable and weak. Many may not want to admit that out-front but it surely happens. Just because someone has down syndrome, doesn’t mean they can live on their own and just because someone has a leg amputated doesn’t mean they can’t climb up stairs. Disabilities are individualized and specific to each person, each with their own caveats depending on who the person is and what their disability is. Depending on those factors also allows that person, if able, to speak for what they can and can’t do. People who have a disability, if able, can determine their capabilities so assuming to know what is best for them is also misguided.
