‘Designer babies’ are referred as children that have been genetically engineered in vitro to have desired qualities. While having an embryo screening, the parents can know the physical characteristics a child will have as well as any genetic diseases like Down syndrome or autism a child can have in future. Majority of the parents go for this treatment for superficial purposes; they want their child to look good and to be intelligent. But the issue is, are the doctors or scientist sure that the technology used is completely safe? Some of the doctors believe that within 10 years they can change the sex of the child and babies could have the eye color parents desire them to have. The Ethical problem lies behind the word ‘hope’ which is there for these procedures. Many people see genetic alerting as morally wrong because people have lost faith in God and they don’t want to accept the child the way he/she was. There is no guarantee that these babies will turn out to be the way parents wanted them to be. The extraction of sperm from father and eggs from the mother is how in vitro fertilization works. Then the embryo is implanted back into mother. The baby is genetically modified with the use of a third parent. So biologically the child has three parents. If this process is not done carefully it can led to termination of the embryo. This procedure is not cheap, not everybody can afford it which can lead to separation in our society. This is because designer babies will most likely to be smarter and better looking than others which would lead to them having better jobs. This will create classes between designer babies and non-designer babies.
