Children and Technology, do parents have a reason to be concerned? As technology expands, so do the concerns of the effects it has on children. Technology has put a lot of strain on relationships between elementary children. Many are addicted to the internet/technology. Often, kids nowadays grow up choosing to use phones, Ipads, and computers instead of going outside and being active. According to Pew Internet Project survey, “eighty-seven percent of teachers felt modern technologies were creating an easily distracted generation.” Why would people want an easily distracted generation? Technology should be a huge concern of parents and be monitored closely so kids can learn communications skills with others, compassion and social skills. …show more content…
Using technology so much as a kid will limit their imagination and creativity, along with their motor developments. Research shows that kids that use technology often are more likely to have a disorder. All of these problems can happen just because kids are choosing technology over being active. Most importantly, too much media and technology time can lead to childhood obesity from lack of physical activity. Parents should make their children get up and move more rather than letting them play hours of video games, watching TV or internet usage. If children put down the media devises and went outside to play more often, childhood obesity would lower and social skills would rise. Technology for children isn’t always bad. They will already know how to utilize it before they get to school, since schools teach with technology now. It also helps children learn with all the new learning apps they have for children. When a child gets grumpy just hand them technology and they will be set for a while. Another thing is they might learn something from it, like the games they play and the learning apps they
A child's overall development can be mental, physical, and emotional. In the article “Give me that old time recess”, the author discussed the negative consequences of children losing playtime. “In a growing number of studies, diminished opportunities for outdoor playtime have been linked with school difficulties, increased childhood anxiety, disconnection from nature, attention deficit disorder, and the epidemic of childhood obesity” (Gross-Loh Par 4). This quote is important because children today are suffering more from obesity, and attention deficit disorders due to the decrease of structured play. Children are becoming less active due to the the dependency on technology. The increase in obesity is the result of the rise in children having smart phones. With children having smartphones, they lose the desire to play outside. The lack of play causes an increase in depression among children and teens. (Tanner Par 10). This is important because today’s generation has a large dependency on technology “Sixty-five percent of children under eight years old watch television daily. On average, they spend about an hour and a half (100 minutes to be exact) watching TV every day.” (Conrad Par 3). Childrens dependency on technology is related to depression because many children have a hard time communicating and socializing with other children due to technology ruining children's interpersonal skills (Bindley Par 4).
Due to this argument, parents and children now heavily rely on technology for a main source of play, limiting the challenges of all creativity and imagination (Rowan 3). Although technology can provide some games and tools that can help children learn, it does not provide the same benefits as actual play and actually causes more harm than good. One of the main problems with play through technology is the fact that children are seeing a “symbolic representation of the real world” and are not receiving a direct experience of the real world with real people and materials (Rice 3). The more time children spend looking at a screen, the more they are isolating themselves and not spending time with other children and adults (Rice 3). This is not only damaging to the learning development of a child, but also the healthy development of forming relationships and social skills (Rice 3). According to a 2010 Kaiser Foundation study, children who are in elementary school use on average 7.5 hours per day of entertainment technology and spending this much “screen time” is damaging to the development of children because their “sensory, motor, and attachment systems have biologically not evolved to accommodate this
“The Risks of Parenting While Plugged In” by Julie Scelfo. This article was about parents paying too much attention to technology that they forget about their little ones. Also how using too much technology can affect your child in negative ways. In the article she states an incident she saw with a mother and son. The son was repeatedly trying to get his moms attention but she wouldn’t look up. Things like this can make children feel ignored make them feel upset. It could make them be on the internet just as much as their parents. Parents now days need to put time aside for their little ones. I agree that things need to change, and we can have better focused parents.
Children nowadays spend a lot of their time using entertainment technology instead of being physically active as a lot of people would remember doing as a child. From the article, “The Impact of technology on the developing child” by Cris Rowan, he says “Juggling school, work, home, and community lives, parents now rely heavily on communication, information, and transportation technology to make their lives faster and more efficient.” This means, that these devices become a large part of people's lives, due to their efficiency and reliability. Parents are heavy users of entertainment technology, which is the reason why children also use it so heavily. Rowan says, “Technology’s impact on the 21st century family is fracturing its very foundation, and causing a disintegration of core values that long ago were the fabric that held families together.” Normal family things such as going out for a bike ride together or going to the park is less common due to the use of entertainment technology by members in the family. This technology is consuming families and is hurting the foundation of what a family
Many people have a wide range of opinions on whether technology is having a positive influence on our children or a negative, there is a vast amount of evidence to support both of these arguments. Technology can refer to so many things, but there are three main parts of technology that have the greatest effect on our children: video games, television/media, and computers. The modern technologies we have today are so powerful because they attract our genetic biases, that the human brain has a tremendous love for visually presented information. Video games, television, movies and computer programs are all very visually oriented and therefore they attract and keep the attention of children easily. By far the largest concern of technology today is video games.
To continue, everyone can agree that children need a healthy environment to develop cognitive, social, emotional, physical and linguistic development. How much technology can improve or distract from these essential skills varies with age. The impact and implications of technology tools on young children has been studied and researched through the Let’s Move Childcare initiative and results concluded that little to no “screen time” is preferred for children under the age of two. For children two years or older, the recommended “screen time” is limited to thirty minutes per week in the classroom setting. (White House, 2011.)
...ttention and focus to reduce the negative impacts on development of children. Research suggests that technology use and especially computers enhances development of children when properly used. On the other hand, the uncontrolled use of technology in childhood education may produce negative effects and impair development in children. Uses of technology in childhood education range from enhancing social interactions, language development to initial computer use skills. It is important to note that, technology use in children education is a matter of how it can be harnessed for the purposes of learning in children. Research by health professionals argues that technology use in children education can produce detrimental health effects especially obesity. Thus, children exposure to technological gadgets like computers and tablets among others should be greatly checked.
Children growing up in the modern world of today would rather stay inside and play on the internet, watch television, or play video games than go outside and play. Serious repetitive strain injuries suffered after spending hours glued to game consoles is up 60% since 2002 (Par. 5 Clarke). Technology and modern society have created lifestyle changes that are detrimental to the well being of children. First, this paper will discuss the effects of technology and modern society on the physical and mental health of the children. Second, the paper will discuss the dangers to children resulting from new technology. Lastly, the paper will discuss the modern lifestyle changes in families and their effects on the children.
There has been a long lasting debate in the resent years on whether or not technology has a positive or negative impact on today’s kids. As the years move on, the negative effects have begun to outnumber the positive. The generations previous spent their childhood making forts, fishing, and using their imaginations, contrary to today’s generations who spend their free time texting, playing video games, and watching videos. Damaging effects such as decreases in school performances, addiction to electronics, and lack of brain development have all been linked to the electronic media stimulation. In order to prevent the future generation from following in the current generations footsteps, one must full comprehend just how much technology impacts
The first reason why modern technology contributes to negative health problems is that children overuse technology, which impact on their physical health.
Also, children who need extra help learning, like kids with special needs, can get the help they need. For example, it has become a new medium for play and entertainment for children, but is this a healthy alternative to older forms of play? And what about parents who use technology just to keep their kids safe? As with all new technologies, there are pros and cons.
Exposing the Negative Effects of Technology on Kids. Global Post. ND. Web. 19 February 2014. Martin, Alice.
Albert Einstein quoted, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” The use of technology today is affecting our future generations by introducing them fast into using technology. Children today are focusing more on Ipads, Ipods, smart phones, or other electronic devices, rather than focusing on their knowledge. In addition, toddlers are mastering using electronic devices before they can even speak. (Alison Lee, 2013) According to research conducted by Alison Lee, it has been shown that when her child was 17 months old, he could activate the television by the use of the remote control. Although, today’s technology has also abducted the minds of adults, and It makes them addicted to it. For example, due to careless driving and many causes of death accidents, this happens from people who use their electronic device while driving their vehicle. In fact, technology is being upgraded annually, and causing more people to get addicted to it. Today’s society is very addicted to technology, that studies indicated that 2013 is the year where some human beings have an internet disorder. In addition, people who have internet disorder suffer from this condition. However, people who are overly attached to the use of technology makes them more prone to anxiety, physiological disorders like cyber bullying, and clutched to that electronic device would dominate home life.
Smartphones. A majority of the population staying on earth has one. They are an amazing innovation in the twenty-first century. It can be used to call, text, take photos and entertain an individual with some fun apps and games. Many parents can be seen these days with a cell phone in their pocket or handbag, chances are that you are one of those parents too! Who else has cell phones? Your children. Although cell phones can be impressive and useful in a variety of endless ways, is it financially necessary and mentally healthy, especially for the younger generations? Well, technically it really isn’t that healthy for an adult’s mental health let alone a young child who is barely aware of how to use an electronic device. The traits that cell
Many kids have computers at home. Majority of them come home from school and just sit at the computer. Not because they have to study something, but because they are bored and they need some sort of entertainment. Children have shown to studies that they have a higher impact on getting obese or develop some sort of dieses. This is caused by the amount of computer usage within a year. Computers also have an effect on your typing. Bad grammar is sometimes also caused by writing in slang on computers. This can result to poor results in school or even a life time habit. There are many ways to prevent this, is giving them a time limit usage on the computer. Promote fun physical activity so kids are not always on the computer. Many kids are not aware of the long term affects of over usage of technology, so they should be taught. Many times when parents tell kids the disadvantages of technology they often listen to what they have to say.
