The USPSTF has identified significant benefits from breastfeeding not only for the infant but also for the mother. There are several recommendations and interventions to promote and support breastfeeding during both the postpartum period as well as during the pregnancy.
My role as a provider includes initiating discussion on providing breastmilk for their newborn via putting the baby to breast, or pumping and feeding breastmilk. This interaction should begin early in the pregnancy and carry right on through birth and into the early postpartum period (Schuiling, 2017). Positive reinforcement and encouragement with every interaction with the mother can be of utmost benefit.

The earlier the newborn is initiated at breast, the earlier that milk production will likely occur. Appropriate milk supply is detrimental in being successful with breastfeeding. Lactogenesis or delayed milk production can be affected by delayed initiation of breastfeeding, ineffective suckling due to factors such as flat or inverted nipples, cesarean birth, increased stress medical conditions and obesity (Schuiling, 2017). Support from staff and lactation consultants can educate mothers on different positions to hold the infant in and nipple shields to impact successful latch thus successful mil supply and continued breastfeeding success (Schuiling, 2017). For decreased milk supply even after the above education and tools are tried, there are several pharmacologic and herbal remedies. These include Reglan or Motilium prescribed by a provider, or over the over the counter herbal fenugreek to help with milk production (Schuiling, 2017). I liked to tell them that their bodies are amazing in that they can produce and provide "liquid gold" for their baby when they often times feel helpless in providing for their newborn during this time. Often, if a mother had decided that she did not want to provide breastmilk after education was provided on all the health benefits for both her and the baby, and informing her that her body is going to make the milk anyways, I am just asking her to catch it in a container in order to give her baby every chance at a healthy beginning to lead towards a healthy
