Free will is the theory that individuals create their own futures based upon their actions in life. These people believe they are able to choose what path they take in life, but that is not always the case. Other people believe free will is an illusion. This group of people believe that other factors play an important role in how our lives play out. During the discussion, we were given a side to argue and my group member and I was apart of the group arguing that free will is an illusion. I agree that free will is an illusion because as an individual we are able to make decisions for ourselves, but we are also influenced by other major factors that have influenced who we are today and what got us there. People may believe they are making their own choices in life but really there are other factors influencing those decisions without a person realizing it. It is believed that externally of free will, physics and biochemistry, predetermine our choices. Also, Scientist Nisbett and Wilson claimed that “all psychological activities are governed by processes of which we are unaware. [...] Emotions can occur with rapid onset, through automatic appraisal, with little awareness and with involuntary changes in expression and physiology; indeed, we often experience emotions as happening to us rather than chosen by us. […]”. This shows that there are certain things we cannot control and sometimes our brains subconsciously make the decision for us.
