Many “sports” have been intensely debated as to whether or not they actually qualify as a sport. Several examples include: bowling, golf, speech, hunting, and fishing. Each of these could be elaborated on, but the focus in this paper will be on fishing. Fishing is a sport. There are two sides to this argument, and both are vehemently defended. Even though the dictionary definition of the term “sport” proves that fishing would be categorized as said sport, the socially accepted definition varies person-to-person based on their own experience and understanding.

All humans are driven by the impulse to compare what lies in the world with their standards of how things are, or should be. For example, if an individual grew up playing cricket and played on a school team, they would most likely argue that cricket is a sport. Another individual who grew up in a completely different area playing football could argue that cricket isn’t a sport, but football is. It all pertains to what’s relatable for people, and their habits affect their outlook of the world around them. If there was no dictionary, everyone would define everything differently; there would be no standard explanation for what something is. In regards to fishing, many people argue that fishing is considered a sport in a professional competition, but not as an informal venture. Otherwise, it is only a hobby or pastime. This is the main point of the opposing argument-if it’s not in a formal environment, it can’t be a sport. Thus, hockey, soccer, football, baseball, basketball, tennis, etc. are all considered to be sports because they have professional teams that play at a national level. These sports are extremely competitive, obviously physically exerting, and they require quite a bit of skill and natural athletic ability. In these regards, it’s easy to classify them as sports because they clearly fulfill all the criteria that determines if an activity is a sport or not. Unless there are official fishing competitions (which, according to the 2017 Bassmaster Tournament Schedule, there have already been at least 36 competitions this year at the local, regional, and national level), most people don’t believe it to be a sport.
