The topic of gun control has been a continuous debate for ages in America. Although the debate is not new, conflict with this issue has gained attention due to the media increasing public awareness of shootings, national proposals to change current gun laws, and a recent Presidential election reminding citizens of the sides they take on matters including gun control. Similar to a multitude of arguments in the country, gun control connects to differences in viewpoints held by the two major parties: Democratic and Republican. The Democratic Party usually persists for more gun control while the Republican Party wants less. A couple gun control proposals have collected the support of the majority of Americans, regardless of whether or not they don’t or do own guns, or if they are Democratic or Republican. The most accepted of these proposals being universal background checks or background checks on all gun transactions including private or those made at gun shows, banning guns from people with mental illness, banning guns from those with certain criminal backgrounds, and requiring people to report lost/stolen guns; all these have garnered over 80% of people surveyed approving them (.https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/01/10/upshot/How-to-Prevent-Gun-Deaths-The-Views-of-Experts-and-the-Public.html). Further controversial and stricter gun control options comprise limiting the ammunition/bullet capacity per person, banning a certain types of guns such as assault rifles, and banning all guns. Suggestions with the most public approval tend relate to ensuring guns do not fall into the hands of the wrong people, instead of completely taking guns away from citizens that legally acquire them.
