Today, you will see countless of people going about their daily activities with a common accessory: earbuds. One person listening to their favorite Spotify playlist through their iPhone may be walking to their nearest Barnes and Noble to pick up Kendrick Lamar’s newest album on vinyl to enjoy through their vintage stereo system. Although, both of the audio formats of vinyl records and digital recordings and streaming have their advantages to every listener’s preference, digital recordings and streaming have an upper hand in the means of convenience, personal listening capabilities, and availability. Vinyl records dominated the sales of of various audio formats in the 20th century. Most would agree that after the surge of compact discs in the early 21st century, vinyl records have made a comeback, and are especially popular with millennials. Vinyl records are especially noted for their sound quality, as records are a form of analog recording. Analog recordings are created by turning air pressure, or sound, into electronic signals. These recordings have unlimited bandwidth and can be moved into higher resolutions without …show more content…
Records are made of polyvinyl compounds, which are plastics. However, these plastics can vary in thickness and quality. Many records are very flimsy, while those that are thicker and heavier can snap in break with only a little amount of force applied. Also, if vinyl records are anywhere near any type of heat, if not stored properly, it is very likely they will warp and be deemed unplayable. Some, if even they are stored in the recommended upright position, run the risk of becoming warped themselves. After a long time of playback, the vinyl record itself can start to deteriorate, and as this happens, the sound quality of the record is diminished. If not handled properly, scratches can become present on the record as well, and this also can cause sound quality to
Everyone can say that music has become a major part of almost everything in our lives, but many argue about whether or not music is a luxury or whether we need it to survive. Music has been around for as long as anyone can remember, yes it has evolved, but there’s always been music it seems. From tribes performing their rituals with music, all the way to someone listening to it just for fun. But, many say that a human needs music to survive, that without it life would not go on. And like mentioned before, it has been around for many years and it seems like one cannot picture a world without it. In my opinion, I believe, that one does not need music to live, it is just something people like to do while studying, practicing a sport, or just for fun.
By 1970 the 16-track recorder was emerging in the rock scene of the United States though the Beatles stuck with the 8-track to record their final albums. Split bank designs became popular offering a main bank of faders used for the mic/line inputs, a separate bank controlling monitor levels and cue mixes and a final section used for other submixes and reverb chambers. The typical price for a 16-track recorder was around $35,000 however the problem of noise build up with numerous tracks still existed (this is the main reason for the lack of interest in 24-track machines at the time).

Thesis Statement: The vinyl record, though underappreciated and often overlooked, has a rich history and interesting process of creation.
How a record player works is quite simple. A motor is somehow connected to a solid disc so that the disc is rotated at a constant speed. On top of the rotating disc (platter), The record is placed on top, with a slip mat in between. The slip mat can serve two functions. In the past to hold the record in place so that it would not rotate independently of the platter. Now, however, the slip mat serves a much different function. Instead of holding the record in place, the slip mat is now used to reduce the friction between the spinning platter and the record. This way a DJ can scratch (manually move the record, usually at high speeds) the record while the platter continues to spin underneath. Once the record is rotating, a stylus glides along the grooves and picks up the vibrations, these are then converted into audible sound.
The Mutual Broadcasting System drops all rock and roll records from its network music programs, calling it "distorted, monotonous, noisy music."
Hip hop is the most controversial genre of music today. There are many people who think the genre only consists of rappers reciting lyrics about sex and drugs. Although there are indeed a lot of songs that have to do with these topics, most hip hop songs discuss real life events. Hip hop is a genre that is very influenced by the environment that the rapper/songwriter is living in. Of all the genres of music, hip hop is the best at stating something without sugar coating it. That is what makes hip hop so interesting to listen to, but unfortunately, it is also what turns a lot of people away from it. A lot of the language that is used in hip hop can be easily considered vulgar, which some people don’t like. However, there is a larger and more important message behind a lot of hip hop music.
copy the discs(148). Marketing and promotion decide the best way to sell the record, while Distribution gets the record in stores. Lastly, and probably most importantly, is the Administration. This handles the bills and keeps track of how well the record is doing in the market(148). Without the help of each of these particular levels, the recording industry would have problems. The only other problem would be to make sure people hear the music and buy the record.
By the late 1960s, musical artists began to think of an LP (long-playing record) or album as a format in itself. This brought along the idea of “Concept Albums” where all the songs have an overall linking idea. Then came progressive rock by the late 1970s which meant traditionally longer songs with a touch of classical feeling. The combination of theatre, rock, opera, and classical music is what makes Queen’s A Night at the Opera (1975) a progressive LP album that shaped how we view the rock n’ roll genre today. A Night at the Opera was also the most expensive album ever made at the time and Queen used 6 different studios to record it.
Edison decided to change the idea by using a tin foil wrapped metal cylinder instead of the paper. The final cylinder phonograph had 2 diaphragm and needle units. One would be for recording date and the other would be for playing it. For the machine to work, one would have to speak into a mouthpiece and the sound vibrations would be imprinted on the cylinder. Then the recording needle would create some sort of groove pattern on the cylinder. The data can then played by back by the data from the created grooves.
Although a lot of times the artists the labels push are not successful, there are also times where they succeed. Artists such as Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, ACDC, Foo Fighters, Journey, The Beastie Boys, Eddie Van Halen, Rick Springfield, The Beatles, and Nirvana are all examples of successful artists who were picked up by record companies because they were the next new, big, thing andor because they were considered to have potential for making money. The record industry has been around for about a century, and recently the record industry has taken on a transformation. ...ats such as paper based and microfilm. Compare to paper based, it does not change the form of paper even how many years pass. With the proper care of the records, record center or an organization can keep the record almost thirty years until the process of destruction. However, it could not happen to an electronic record, because technologies rapidly change. There always have new software or hardware that will be upgrade and become more advance. Actually, even under the best storage conditions, digital media have a very limited shelf life, generally less than thirty years. The efforts to preserve the physical media thus provide only a short term, partial solution to the general problem of preserving digital information. Given such rates of technological change, even the most fragile media may well survive the continued availability of equipment to read those media.
” In 1930, RCA Victor launched the first commercially-available vinyl long-playing record” (About Vinyl Records 2). Vinyl records are round plastic discs that have about a 12-inch diameter. To listen to a vinyl record, you have to place it on a record player, which was invented in 1877. The record player was introduced by Thomas Edison and is a more updated and improved version of ...
Introduction The modern music industry is undergoing dramatic changes due to technological advancement and innovation in state-of-the-art microphones, speakers, studio monitors, and sampling equipment. Such technological advancements are useful in various facets of the music industry including production, distribution, and reception of music in the market. Many of these changes are evident in the invention of equipment that enhances the process of producing and distributing popular music (Longhurst, 2007). For instance, high-fidelity microphones and equipment that enhance re-mastering functions have also complemented the development of music.
Live and recorded music have many differences that make each unique and enjoyable. Live music may be more costly and time consuming, but it is more energetic and interesting than recorded music. Live music can be dangerous and cause hearing problems, yet concerts are still selling out. Recorded music is cheaper and can be accessed almost anywhere, but it is not as exciting. Even through these differences, both types of music have the same basic structure, and is served as entertainment purposes that many individuals
