Have you ever thought about living on the red planet? It is a breathtaking, heavenly body, with long stretches of red dirt as well as a large canyon. It may sound like a beautiful place to live, but don't let it fool you, Mars has harsh dust storms and the largest volcano in the solar system. Living there would be almost impossible, but research is proving that living on the red planet may soon be a reality.
In order to live on Mars, research has to be done. One of the factors scientists have to consider is how to feed the colonists of Mars. It may seem like a problem that could be solved very easily, but if the explorers of Mars wish to survive, massive amounts of research must be done. They cannot carry enough food to be able to survive long enough. The ship would be too heavy and it could be unhealthy. Scientist already know that humans are able to grow food in space as long as the area is protected. The most important thing that we need to find out is how to grow food on Mars. …show more content…

Mars soil composition is unique because of its large deposits of oxidized iron dust. It also contains a compound called perchlorates, an ester of perchloric acid. According to studies, microbes survive well on perchlorates, which means that plants may still be able to survive in Mars soil. That doesn’t mean that the crops would be edible, the chemical would make the crops dangerous to eat.
