Are You a Procrastinator? The results of the assessment were a total score of sixty-nine. The score of sixty-nine demonstrate that I endure not being a systematic procrastinator. I am avoiding procrastination because I do not like to stress about things I should have done beforehand. Procrastination is the acts of prioritizing things are not significant information over the more urgent tasks. I procrastinate because I occasionally have fears of what has to be completed. Procrastination develops like a credit card that satisfies with happiness until the bill is sent that has to be paid. The factors I believe that contributes to the tendency of procrastination are the characteristics of the assignment, fear, rebelliousness, lack of focus, and excuses. The things I can do to get rid of the factors that cause procrastination are by confessing to what I am guilty of. Next, I acquire and identify information that triggers procrastination and develop a plan for what I want to achieve. Then, I have to gain leverage and develop an action plan. Lastly, I must take purposeful action to be efficient and successful in my academic career. The strategies that can be used to reduce procrastination are time management skills, minimizing distractions, gaining flexibility, and creating a rewards’ system. These strategies will help improve efficiency in my tasks and goals. These strategies will assist me to improve focus, confidence, and direction. It will provide me with the tools and resources needed to effectively break the cycle of procrastination that can sometimes creep into my
Out of the three attempts to squash my tendency to procrastinate, only one seemed to work. The first thing I tried that worked, was to set a timer for 10 minutes, and just work for those 10 minutes. Next, I would give myself a 10 minute break. This was an idea suggested by my professor at the beginning of the year. This worked at first; I would get into my writing mojo, and not stop for an hour or so.

Urban got a large response from his blog, receiving emails from many readers. Urban described these emails with having an intense frustration about what procrastination had done to their lives, although some emails had a very light tone as well. The Greek poet, Hesiod, once said not to “put your work off till tomorrow and the day after (Jaffe, 2013).” According to the Cambridge dictionary, procrastination is the putting off of something important. When one first sees Hesiod’s quote, it sounds as if it is just one of those phrases that have been repeated so much that it has lost virtually all meaning. Hesiod’s quote reveals that procrastination has been around for a really long time, and since early times, people have tried to warn against it. De Paul professor, Joseph Ferrari discovered that up to 20% of people are chronic procrastinators(Jaffe,2013). That is not including the rest of the population that fall between occasional procrastinator and the procrastinator that does it just to see what they can get away with. There are many causes that can lead to procrastination, which is a hint as to why it is such a big issue. The result of those causes is procrastination, which is not without consequence. Procrastination can lead to a decline in one’s mental and physical health, mental stability, and emotional well-being. However, along with those negative effects, there are ways to combat procrastination.
Consequences related to procrastination often outweighed its proposed benefits for it is frequently associated with self-defeating behavior, the ineffective weighing of short term and long term benefits, (Tice & Baumeister) and poor mental health (Ferrari, Johnson, McCown); in addition to internal subjective discomfort such as irritation, self-blame and regret (Solomon, Rothblum & Murakami) procrastination is also linked to “weak impulse control, lack of persistence, lack of work discipline, lack of time management skill, and the inability to work methodically.” (Ferrari & Diaz-Morales) Other complications which may arise from overall procrastination may be related to sleep deficiency, often when one procrastinates with a specific item one may take up useful time which may be spent on something other than that. Procrastination with academic assignment will need to be competed at a certain point and the time spent on recovering lost time will be taken away from one’s sleep time. For many people, they claim that the reason they aren’t doing the task is the lack of motivation. So, in order to solve the complication, is to reward yourself when the task is accomplished. By implementing this belief in order to stop procrastination, I set rewards for myself in order to attain. For example, every time I finish a section for my math class, I rewarded myself by watching Youtube, scrolling through social media, etc. By prohibiting the temptation of going on the internet, it made me finish the task quickly. As a result, being successful in accomplishing the task, compared to endeavoring a punishment due to my lackluster of performance when attaining a goal.
