James Joyce’s short story “Araby” is about a boy who is obsessed with a girl. The boy, who is the narrator, looks forward to seeing the girl, who is his friend Mangan's sister, everyday. The boy obsesses over the girl and is always thinking about her and imagining scenarios with her in his head. When the girl asks him if he is going to Araby, a bazaar, the boy jumps to tell her he will buy her something there. The boy fusses over what to buy the girl in hopes that the gift will make her satisfied. A major theme in the story is glorification, both in how the boy glorifies the girl and the gift, and it creates the false impression that happiness is found in other things. The boy glorifies the girl as if she is an untouchable item. The boy does not have any contact with the girl, but is anxious when she calls Managan home for tea or when she is walking to school. The boy is so concerned about going to the bazaar that his thoughts about it conflict with his daily life. He says, “At night in my bedroom and by day her image came between me and the page I strove to read. The syllabus of the word Araby were called to me through the silence in which my soul luxuriated and cast an Eastern enchantment over me” (Joyce 201). When he arrives at the bazaar he sees the “magical name” displayed on the door (Joyce 202). He is adamant on finding the right gift because he wants the girl to be happy with him. The short story “Araby” has a major theme of glorification. At the end, the boy does not buy a gift from the bazaar and does not talk to the girl again, although he had put all his happiness and effort in those two things.
