In March 2012, the Fair Labor Association had conducted an extensive investigation, commissioned by Apple, on labor conditions at three massive Chinese factories where the company’s iPhones, iPads, and other products manufactured by Apple. The Fair Labor Association is a non-government organization that is highly committed to promoting fair labor practices internationally. During their investigation, they found a number of serious violations of Apple’s supplier code of conduct, in addition to its own standards. When the Fair Labor Association completed its audit they found the following problematic issues. For example, during peak production periods, operated by the Taiwanese firm Foxconn, had exceeded 60 hours per week, and many employees were also required to work more than seven consecutive days before having a day off. According to Apple’s code of conduct, an employee is only required to work 40 hours a week, and should receive a day off after working 5 days.
