The Anzac Legend is such an important event in Australian history. It began on the 25th of April 1915 and Australia began to commemorate it a year later in 1916. It was created because the ANZAC soldiers fought bravely for our country, showing we were just as good as the rest.

Although the Gallipoli Campaign was a disastrous few years, with many losses and the failure of victory, the ANZAC’S are still known as legends and heroes. The legend is that the Australian and New Zealand troops helped in establishing their country’s reputation in the world, through qualities of strength and bravery when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. They sacrificed their lives for our country because they were proud of where they were from and wanted to prove that. Many soldiers kept diaries; recording their feelings and the conditions they were faced with. They endured horrific weather conditions, food and diseases. From blistering heat to freezing cold blizzards, the men only ever had clothes to be used during the warm months and were useless in the cold. These clothes would become worn out and blankets were used when the soldiers were off-duty. For the men on-duty, freezing to death was always a possibility. Nurses would have to amputate toes, feet and arms because of severe frostbite. There was barely any clean water in the trenches of Gallipoli. Soldiers were often ordered to never have more than 2.3 litres a day. It was usually drunk in the form of tea. The main diet of soldiers mainly included bully beef (canned meat), stale biscuits and tea, with occasional bread, cheese and vegetables. Not only did the men die on the battlefield, they also died in the trenches because of diseases. In the hot weather flies, maggots and mosquitoes were everywhere. Diseases include dysentery, diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, typhoid, influenza, trench foot and trench fever.
