What Symptoms are Common with Antisocial Personality Disorder in Children?
In the movie The Good Son (1993) Henry is the main character. He has a personality that no one can understand. He does violent acts that end up hurting people and no one really notices except his cousin Mark. Henry has everyone brainwashed on how good and innocent of a kid he is, but Mark knows who he really is. Henry has no remorse on any of the bad and violent acts or behaviors that he has done to cause people to get hurt. Henry seems to be experiencing antisocial personality disorder. Antisocial personality disorder is defined as a type of chronic mental condition that a person’s way of thinking and disregarding situations are dysfunctional (Antisocial Personality Disorder, 2013). In Henry’s case it is defined as physical or verbally harmful to others including animals and property that includes violent behaviors that is not expected in a child in normal social settings or expectations (Antisocial Personality Disorder- Children’s Health, 2015). Henry shows that he doesn’t know right from wrong and the lack of empathy and remorse when he had killed the dog with the crossbow that shoots bolts, when he threw “Mr. Highway” over the bridge and when he threw his little sister onto a thin piece of ice while they were ice skating. He also shows wit and charm throughout the whole movie. He uses that to manipulate everyone, including Mark at the beginning of the movie, to think that he is the greatest kid ever and he does nothing wrong. Mark soon realized that Henry was a bad guy and that something was really wrong with him. He didn’t know any other way of parenting besides the cold, divisive parenting he received from his father. Because of this, a rift formed between Henry and his only son Marty, much like the one that existed between Henry and his father. Now, with the recent passing of Henry’s wife Ethel, the void between them has re-emerged and it is larger and more pronounced than ever. This is due to the fact that Ethel was the glue that filled in the cracks and crevices between Henry and Marty, but with her gone Henry and Marty fight and argue more than ever.
Henry's flaws were very similar to those of Pip and the Greek heroes. Arrogance was a flaw that many Greek mortal heroes, especially Odysseus and Oedipus, had. When Henry realized that none of his fellow soldiers were aware that he had run from the first battle, he regained his self-pride and self-confidence. Before long, he had convinced himself that he was "chosen of the gods and doomed to greatness." At first, Pip believed that status and wealth determined the "goodness" of a person. Henry had similar illusions. He believed that a war hero was a person who could manage to escape every tight situation he got into, and also a godly figure people looked up to and were fascinated by. His other illusions were that the only the best could survive against the hideous "dragons" of war, and that the enemy was a machine that never tired or lost will to fight.
The first time Henry's flaw improves is when he is mad at himself for running away from the battle and he begins to relate to nature.

Henry suffers from retrograde amnesia due to internal bleeding in the part of the brain that controls memory. This causes him to forget completely everything he ever learned. His entire life is forgotten and he has to basically relearn who he was, only to find he didn’t like who he was and that he didn’t want to be that person. He starts to pay more attention to his daughter and his wife and starts to spend more time with them.

First, Anti Social Personality Disorder is a mental condition that can cause a person to think and behave in a destructive manner. “Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is characterized by a pattern of socially irresponsible, exploitative, and guiltless behavior. ASPD is associated with co-occurring mental health and addictive disorders and medical comorbidity.” (Black, 2015) People with ASPD have a habit of antagonizing and manipulating others but also have no awareness for what is right and what is wrong. One tends to disregard the feelings and wishes of others. “ASPD typically begins during childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood.” (Kivi, 2012) ASPD usually is noticed around 8 years old, but it is categorized as a conduct disorder. Though children can be treated in what doctors may think is ASPD, children will not be completely diagnosed with the title of ASPD until at least 18 years of age. In time those with ASPD behavior usually end up turning criminal.

Explanations of antisocial personality disorder come from the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and biological models. As with many other personality disorders, psychodynamic theorists propose that this disorder starts with an absence of parental love during infancy leading to a lack of basic trust. In this view, the children that develop this disorder respond to early inadequacies by becoming emotionally distant, and they bond with others through use of power and destructiveness. Behavioral theorists have suggested that antisocial symptoms may be learned through modeling, or imitation. As evidence, they point to the higher rate of antisocial personality disorder found among the parents of people with this disorder. Other behaviorists suggest that some parent’s unintentionally teach antisocial behavior by regularly awarding a child’s aggressive behavior. The cognitive view says that people with this disorder hold attitudes that trivialize the importance of other people’s needs. Cognitive theorists also believe that these people have a genuine difficulty recognizing a point of view other than their own. Finally studies show that biological factors may play an important role in developing antisocial disorder. Researchers have found that antisocial people, particularly those with high impulse and aggression, display lower serotonin activity and has been linked this same activity with other studies as well.
I have decided to research the development of antisocial personality disorders due to the quality of early childhood care and early childhood experiences. Antisocial personality disorder is described generally as disregard for others. Diagnosing ASPD involves features such as delinquency, physical assaults, deceitfulness and lying, impulsivity, and irresponsibility. This topic appealed to me because my step sister goes to see a therapist and they have reason to believe that she may have an antisocial or borderline personality disorder. While I won’t divulge, she has had many traumatic childhood experiences and had quite the rough upbringing with her parents. This led me to be interested in this article and to find out more about the connections between the two phenomena.
Conduct Disorder has been a part of the American Psychological Association’s Diagnostic Statistical Manuel (DSM) since its original release date in 1994. Although, there is new information about the disorder that was previously unknown, Conduct Disorder is distinguished by a “repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate norms or rules are violated” (American Psychiatric Association, 1994.) This mild, moderate, or severe antisocial behavior begins to appear either in childhood, categorized as early-onset conduct disorder , or in adolescence after ten years of age, classified as adolescent-onset conduct disorder (Passamonti et al., 2010.) The criteria to meet to be diagnosed with this disorder are separated into four subgroups: aggressive conduct, nonaggressive conduct, deceitfulness or theft, and serious violations of the rules. Three or more incidents must be present in the past twelve months with at least one of the characteristics being present in the past six months. This disorder causes severe impairment of functioning across a variety of situations so it is important to keep in mind society and individual situations because this diagnosis may be “misapplied to individuals in settings where patterns of undesirable behavior are sometimes viewed as protective” (American Psychiatric Association, 1994.) For example, a patient that has recently relocated from a war torn country would most likely not be a candidate for Conduct disorder even though he or she may exhibit some of the characteristics.

Conduct disorder (CD) in children and adolescence is a serious matter that has major adverse effects to the child, to their parents, and to their entire community. This disorder is chronic and worsens overtime that forces the child into a life of risky aggressive impulses, pattern of destructive behavior, disregard for rules, regulation, and authority. Since CD is a condition that develops over a long period of time, children can carry the side effects of negative behaviors into their adulthood. CD is one of the most common diagnosed disorder among children and adolescence, and according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Mental health integration, 2009), “Conduct Disorder s repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated” (Mental health integration, 2009). At a young age, children with CD will have difficulties in school; learning, forming friendships, and become socially rejected by their peers. By the time the child is an adolescent, CD can stem into many other undesired mental concerns and disorders. An adolescent with CD will likely have numerous run-ins with the law, difficulties forming and maintaining relationships, and difficulty sustaining long-term employment.
