“We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, one, indivisible, and forever.” Anthem is a novella by Ayn Rand, an author who is famous for writing about the idea of collectivism. In this novella, Rand uses a completely different form and style compared to her other books. Anthem does not have a plot. However, if there were to be a climax in this story, it would be the moment the main character, Prometheus, discovers the word “I”. The last two chapters following this climax are said to be “the actual anthem”, in which Rand delivers her philosophy of Objectivism. Prometheus stated in the last chapter of Anthem that he understood “why the best in me had been my sins and my transgressions; and why I had never felt guilt in my sins.” When reading this, two questions came into mind. What is exactly was “the best” in Prometheus? Why did his society think that this was sinful?
