What Is Anorexia Nervosa? While there are many types of eating disorders Anorexia Nervosa is the most commonly known disorder than can range from any gender or age. In the U.S. alone at least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder. This deadly, but treatable, eating disorder can not only affect one's physical state, but also mental. An emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat can be described as anorexia nervosa. The exact cause of this disorder is unknown; however, there are some psychologists that believe some cases are due to genetics. In a study that was conducted on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and neurotransmitters, which control appetite, they found that, “ abnormal biochemical makeup of the brain may lead to decreased serotonin and norepinephrine levels.” On the other hand, some psychologist also believe that culture and emotional trauma is also a cause in anorexia. Due to low self-esteem and culture influence of thinness these individuals feels as if they are never thin enough even though they have lost a significant amount of weight. …show more content…

According to a web page called Mirror Mirror for eating disorders, “the earliest effects of anorexia include things like weakness, dizziness, fainting, fatigue, constipation, bloating, and stomach pains.” Even though these can take a toll on the body, they are not the worse symptoms that someone can have.
