Cawthorpe, Wilkes, Guyn, Li & Lu (2011) conducted a study on the use of healthcare and its cost on mental health. The purpose is to compare “the healthcare costs of groups of patients with and without psychiatric diagnoses using a 9-year physician billing data” (Cawthorpe et al, 2011 p. 490). Based on the goal and data, a quantitative method of analysis should be used for this research because this type of study requires a statistical method to analyze the findings which Cawthorpe et al explicitly noted within the article. In addition, the article cited that a dataset containing enlistment information for all the patients receiving the public health service including the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD) were used by the authors to gather physical diagnoses and mental disorders of the participants which are all component of a quantitative method.
