The Diary of A Young Girl contains journal entries written by a thirteen year old named Anne Frank. Anne Frank is a Jewish girl that is given a diary on her thirteenth birthday. Her first entry dates back to June 12th, 1942. (1) She writes about boys, friends, grades, and daily thoughts. (5-18) Her sister, Margot Frank, receives a call up for a German Work camp. A day after, Anne and her family go into hiding. Together, she hides with seven other people in the “Secret Annex.” (21-30) During the two years of hiding, Anne writes in her diary as source of comfort and support. Not long before the war ends, the eight are found and relocated to concentration camps. Soon after being sent to concentration camps, Anne and Margot both die of typhus; an infectious disease caused by rickettsiae. Because they are hiding, Anne cannot have a normal school experience, so she is homeschooled. Anne’s liking for knowledge of literature grows and enjoys studying and writing. To pass time, Anne would often study or read. As Anne grows older, she seeks affection and turns toward Peter. Anne and Peter grow close once they started talking in the attic. Anne desired Peter’s love and attention. (243) It was so evident that the two liked each other, that Anne’s mother noticed. They later shared a lip-lock up in the attic. (226-267) On August 4, 1944, not long before the end of the war, German police officers stormed into the Secret Annex and arresting everyone hiding there. They had been betrayed by an anonymous tip. The residents of the Secret Annex were shipped to Camp Westerbork. Then, they were transferred to the Auschwitz death camp. When they had arrived, the men and women were separated.
