Humorous, witty, and self-depreciating are words that might come to mind when reading over Anne Bradstreet's The Author to Her Book. In fact, many aspects of the author’s personality can be gathered from this work. There are certain traits in particular that stand out. The author comes across in this writing as being fondly exasperated with her friends, who published the book without her permission. However, she is gracious enough to not seem overly angry with them. This indicates that she is both patient and well mannered, and that she values these friendships over her own feelings of embarrassment. Historical Puritan Writing and Poetry In the late 1600’s, literature is dissimilar from today’s, such as focusing on being sent into the fiery pits of hell only because one hasn’t converted to Puritanism. There are also different types of writing to display the righteousness and positives of being a convert and loyal to the Puritan culture. Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards are two popular Puritan authors who project different messages and portray varying energy through a slim number of their pieces. The poems, “To My Dear and Loving Husband” or “Upon the Burning of Our House” by Anne Bradstreet or “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards are fit examples of the Puritan age and what Puritans believe to be religiously correct or incorrect.
Anne Bradstreet: the first American to have her poems published. Throughout her works, she captured what it was like to be a pioneer in a new land. Thanks to her family’s high stature and disposition in life, Anne Bradstreet was given an education: something that was not very common for women in the 1600's. Her poems enable her to speak freely and express the world through a women's eye. In doing so she laid down the foundation to what it truly means to be American.
In the introduction of the author’s essay, she starts off with interviews and examples of everyday people. Her modesty can be seen, or better to call her understatement, in page 125. When you continue reading and you reach the middle of it, you will see how gradually transforms from calmness to showing strong protest, which is covered up with polite style. Still the ironic tone she uses exposes her disapproval. In Ian McEwan’s novel Atonement, he illustrates a Bildungsroman, a coming of age of novel, that shows the reflection of the young protagonist Briony Tallis.From a young age, Briony was passionate about writing and desires to become a sophisticated writer that has recognition for her works. However, there is an alternative motive to her writing since it is her coping mechanism to the demons in her head and she chooses to express her thoughts and frustrations through her work. When Briony receives her rejection letter from the paper for her novel, McEwan reveals that people hide behind their decisions and attempt to justify their actions until others scrutinize their former mistakes.
In the story, the narrator is forced to tell her story through a secret correspondence with the reader since her husband forbids her to write and would “meet [her] with heavy opposition” should he find her doing so (390). The woman’s secret correspondence with the reader is yet another example of the limited viewpoint, for no one else is ever around to comment or give their thoughts on what is occurring. This passage shows the reader that the couple experience sexual awkwardness in many ways. Florence’s fear and inexperience clearly contribute to this sexual awkwardness, as does her denial and repression of emotions. McEwan portrays this through linguistic devices as well as through forma and structure.
The poem "Her Kind" by Anne Sexton displays an aspect of the author’s life in a more emotional state. In the poem Sexton describes her journey of life as a woman; she remembers all the hardships she has been challenged with and emphasizes that her path through life was not all in sunshine. Throughout, the poem she uses incredible language to describe her hardships that she faced. She overall connects this to the fact that she is a woman. Anne is not angry at the fact that she has to face all the hardships as a woman but instead agrees that she is a brave woman. Although, her journey through life has made her feel constantly criticized as well as an outcast in the female world, she believed that she is just one of a kind.
In April 1935, Latham launched a three-month literary tour through the U.S. in search of new authors, starting in Georgia. He met Margaret at a luncheon in his honor at the Atlanta Athletic Club and asked if he could read her manuscript. She was flattered but knew the awful shape her manuscript was in. The yellow paper had faded, and there were many changes made in pencil. She had different versions of some chapters, and she hadn't even written an opening chapter. Embarrassed, she denied that she had anything to show him. He gave her other opportunities to share her work, and she refused to discuss it each time. But she did promise that he would be the first to look at it when she was ready to show it. She thought this was an unlikely possibility. But then something happened that changed her mind -and her life- forever.
