Today, when women need a little inspiration or guidance with everyday tasks, they often turn to one popular social media website, Pinterest. This site allows users to save pictures under certain categorical “boards.” Pictures range from today’s fashion, to homemade recipes, to wedding playlists, and to travel locations. There seems to be “pins” for just about anything. It is an extremely clever site that allows people to organize their thoughts and ideas, realistic or not, on one page. Pinterest also displays communication and its effect on the users. It connects with three major communication concepts: similarity, individual orientation, and attractiveness.

The continued advancement of information and communication technologies has virtualized interpersonal communication process in various ways. Initial definitions of Interpersonal Communication indicated that the interaction/s needs to be face-to-face, but now with technological innovations the concept is getting disputed. In terms of dating (within my age group), prevalent usage of dating websites, and phone apps such as Tinder, OkCupid, and Match are normal and standard. In an article published in The Atlantic it stated, “American adults ages 18 to 24 used online-dating sites and apps at an average rate for all American adults—about 10 percent. Since then, that rate has almost tripled. College-aged and post-college-aged Americans are now the most likely demographic to turn to the technology” (Robinson Meyer, The Atlantic.com). The interactions and behaviors of dating using
Social media provides available channels that allow students to work together in the process of creating significant meaning in academic subjects, as well as in their work environments (Gill & Scharff, 2011). Social media platforms have been regularly utilized in businesses to enhance connections between workers and to provide platforms for seamless collaboration. Supporting the development of such skills among student populations helps them to gain skills crucial for real world work environments.

Are you on Pinterest? Do you just dabble in it? Become a pinning addict? Or somewhere in between? Personally I’ve can answer yes to all those questions. I went from a personal account, to business account, and just dabbled while I focused on Twitter. Sadly, Twitter isn’t working like it used to for me. I couldn’t decide if I should shift my focus to my Facebook business page or Pinterest; when my angels whispered, “Pinterest.”
Online dating has become popular among people of all ages by allowing them to choose exactly the right person. According to Barbara Mantel, “One in ten American adults has tried online dating, and nearly sixty percent of Internet users say it is a good way to meet people” (265). Modern technology offers users to look for a partner on the Internet, taking into account a variety of features. Dating online has become popular not only among young people but also among older people. Some sites target users seeking short-term relationships while others offer their services for those who are wishing to find a life partner. Online dating is a simple and easy way to meet people with similar interests, beliefs, and attitudes. It also does not require people to go out after a hard day; they can find their loved ones sitting comfortably in their favorite

“We live in a technological universe in which we are always communicating. And yet we have sacrificed conversation for mere connection.”(Turkle, 1) The increase of social media has affected communication and relationship skills in a negative way. In our modern world, face to face relationships are overlooked, they are obsolete, a skill of the past. Face to face communication is being lost through our devices, social media, and the development of new technologies. The concern now is communicating by text is preferred by people over face to face conversations. “Coffee dates are things of the past; now if a person wants to get to know someone better, he or she can just comb through their Facebook profile to find out their interests.” (Loch, 1) When we learn things about people through social media and the internet, there is no emotional connection. We cannot sense the tone in their voice, facial expression, or whether the information is true. These things are not present while texting- we cannot tell how things are being said and a mi...
6). The Internet has affected our everyday culture in how we communicate. Virtual communications are now a big part of our culture. “Human beings need to network. It is one of the major sources of happiness and fulfillment and the more they interact, the more satisfied they are going to feel” (Cohn, 2012). With network-based social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, we are able to communicate quickly. People use social media, texting, and email to communicate, instead of face-to-face interactions, phone calls, and writing letters. The ease interactions that people have through social media allows for relationships to flourish.
In the 20th century, Western culture has been preoccupied with the self, and social psychology reflects this through the infinitely many “self-” attributes: esteem, efficacy, standards, concept, reactiveness, awareness, among others (Goethals, 2003). However, in the time of the Internet, the singular self is split into the many social media platforms in which people have accounts (Valkenburg, Schouten, Peter, 2005). Netizens log on to Facebook to catch up with friends and long lost acquaintances, play games and send largely ignored requests, and stay up to date with the news and commentary as filtered by their selected echo chambers. Twitter is a site for disjointed thoughts and high-paced exchanges of character-limited think-pieces and two-cent opinions. Instagram is a repository of selfies and groufies in poses dictated by the latest trend, pictures of pets to food or overly-filtered images, to blaring examples of

There is no doubt that social and digital media help out almost everyone in their daily lives. Social media spreads ideas, knowledge and helps to organize our real world and digital world relationships. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Social media can be defined as forms of electronic communication which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. Social and digital media play a big part of our lives and the different forms of it help shape us as individuals. However social media can have a negative impact on the quality of our lives. Although experts say digital media helps us because it may enhance time management skills; increase efficiency or social relations; and may even improve sanguinity and self-esteem, as well as knowledge. But social media is seen as a metaphor for real
Today, social media became a primary component of our spirit. Mariam Webster dictionary defines social media as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and micro blogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content” (merriam-webster.com, May 18-2014). The entire human population is plugged into the network with the help of blogging websites such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. It is highly rare to find an alienated person from the network, as this modern application of technology links everyone with the click of a mouse. It is the new generation of socializing method. Social media websites bridge the gap between different nationalities, cultures and mentalities generally and it is used nowadays for academic and business reasons.
According to Ellison et al (2007), Lytras and Garcia (2008), and Lytras and Ordóñez de Pablos, (2007), “Facebook creates an online social space where university students can build and maintain social capital with others (Cheunga, Chiua & Leeb, 2011).” Facebook and Instagram prove a convenient platform for students to know others, and find others with common self-guides or meet idealized goals shared with others, whether in study or life. This can promote students to help each other for common progress. Students also can use those SNS to understand salient aspects of themselves, and maintain interpersonal communication. Meanwhile, they also can talk freely with others in order to fun and relaxation in those virtual SNS. This is useful for Chinese freshman who have no idea about their goals, don’t have many friends, or have a lot of pressure. Facebook and Instagram are a great online communication space for freshmen to maintain and develop relationships with
Technology has been and will continue to be an essential part of human life. Information technology is a revolution that has taken the whole world captive. Everyone around the globe is trying either to conform or catch up with the ever changing and improving technologies without having a second thought of its impact on their lives. The internet is the ground-breaking invention of the twenty first century, leading to the mushrooming of the social media and other communication platforms. The best invention that has captured my interest is the instagram. Its effect and how it has positively impacted on the lives of people, especially the youth cannot be underestimated. Instagram is improving the quality life. It has unlocked our creativity, enhanced connection and led to faster access to information. Comparing the past with the present, we can argue that information technology has done more good than harm and even as we progress into the future, we ought to adopt better technology because what we currently have may not be good enough.
Instagram is very similar to Facebook, yet it provides the opportunity to skip past all the mind numbing statuses and irrelevant shared links and allow users to proceed to check out the latest happy snaps of their proclaimed ‘friends’ latest experiences. The way in which an individual is presented is rapidly becoming the sole devotion to their life. As this is becoming increasingly popular, so is Instagram, allowing people to falsify and embellish their drab lives. Expert, Hanna Krasnova of Humboldt University and cofounder of the study of social media’s correlation to envy, states that ‘You get more explicit and implicit cues of people being happy, rich, and successful from a photo than from a status update”. Thus manifesting the idea that Instagram is now dominating the popular social media site Facebook by allowing users to solely share their over planned and pretentious images...
