Hundreds of millions of animals die every year from animal testing in the United States. Innocent animals are used everyday in laboratories for biology advancements, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetic testing. They are used to provide information to make better products that are safe for human use. Although animal experimentation has some benefits, the negatives outweigh the positives. They were created by Russel and Burch in 1959. The three R’s are reduction, refinement, and replacement. In her essay “Testing Chemical Safety: What Is Needed to Ensure the Widespread Application of Non- animal Approaches?” Natalie Burden describes the effects of the three R’s principles when explained “Since then, there have been increasing requirements for scientists using animals in their daily work to consider and incorporate these guiding principles into their research. A recent surge in initiatives from various organizations around the world is helping to create an environment in which the consideration and application of the 3Rs is becoming more widespread” (2). With the spread of these three principles, animal testing could eventually be vanished. Reduction is the first of the three R’s; without reducing the number of animals used in laboratories, there will be no change. Researchers also need to refine with what they can do during their studies. With low regulation laws, refinement is needed to make a lasting change in these industries. They believe that it is a lot better to test a product on an animal than testing it on a human because human lives come first. Prior to human testing, however, preclinical studies using animal subjects are usually performed in order to provide initial data on the safety and effectiveness of prospective treatments” (1). He explains how animal testing allows a product to be researched greater depths. Testing can show human medical advancements without putting a human in danger. He believes he use of animals for toxicology testing is necessary to ensure patient safety in developments. However, his ideas are wrong. The majority of medical experiments using animal testing fail. Also, there are alternative ways to test a product, it doesn’t have to be injected into an animal. Albert Sabin, the developer of the polio vaccine once said, “Without animal research, polio would still be claiming thousands of lives each year.” Polio is a deadly disease caused by a virus that spreads from person to person. This infectious disease renders the brain and spinal cord helpless while also ensuring a permanent case of paralysis to the victim. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “…13,000 to 20,000 para-lytic cases were reported annually,” before the 18th century. After the introduction of the polio vaccine, “…a total of 2,525 paralytic cases were reported, compared with 61 in 1965.” This dramatic decrease in the prominence of the polio disease can only be attributed to the success of animal testing. Animal experimentation is used in the research of genetics, drug testing, biology, toxicity testing, cosmetic testing, and many other fields. Despite all of its beneficial traits, animal testing has been wildly controversial over the past decades because of its perceived unethical treatment towards animals. Although animal testing may be deemed unethical by many, it is a form of medical testing that has not only saved lives but has also greatly revolutionized the medical world.

Although not as strictly addressed, there is still a schism when it comes to the matters of experimentation involving animals. Those in opposition of it see it as being against the will of the animal, because animals have no say in the matter. However, through animal experimentation there has been vast medical advances in hospitals and veterinarians , research has led to cures for various diseases that would normally take many more years to cure, and the use of animals is highly ethical considering what could be the alternative, although there is progress being made to change these measures. Animal abuse can be more than what meets the eye. Specifically, animal testing is a form of animal abuse and usually ends in the death of a harmless animal.
