“In 2004 (U.S) 1,101,958 animals were tested on. That is just including dogs, cats, primates, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits and farm animals. This does not include the millions or mice and rats tested on each year, because the government does not consider mice and rats "real" animals; therefore experimenters do not keep track of how many they test.” (Pruce). Millions of innocent animals are tortured each year through cruel processes in order to improve human’s appearances and health. With the amount of time, resources and money used in this industry, one would think that advancements would seem abundant, but in reality animal testing has not led to major outbreaks and is further a waste of taxpayer’s money. Upon the millions of animals losing lives, taxpayers losing money and science not advancing further, animal testing is avoidable, immoral and futile to society. Stated in our ‘Declaration of Independence,’ humans possess their “unalienable rights” because we are of the genus and species Homo sapiens. This unsigned contract is the origin of most laws protecting humans from violence and self-harm. However, animals are not provided with this privilege. The only rights acquired by animals are those granted by humans. According to Justin Goodman, “animal rights activists perceive that simply by virtue of birth, every organism, everywhere, is endowed with the same rights as citizens of the most progressive democracy.” Zoo occupants, domesticated pets, and service animals are administered securities by the human race from the troubles of the state of nature such as the starvation and natural disasters in exchange for their ability and willingness to be trained to serve the human race’s needs.
