Perfume. Make-up. Baking Soda. Sunscreen. Toothpaste. Soap. People use these products everyday completely unaware of the harm caused towards animals for you to have that product in your hands. Animal Testing is unjustified, brutal. Animal Testing tortures innocent animals every single day. I believe that animals should be given the same moral consideration as humans. Animal testing can provide false results and causes suffering and pain. It is cruel for animals to be exposed to harmful experiments and live in restricting isolated conditions as it would be for humans too. Each year, over two hundred million innocent animals are injured or killed in laboratory experiments all over the world. Of those animals, between seventeen and twenty million are used in the United States. Animals are a crucial part of society, they are our pets, our companions, our best friends. If we continue treating them as we do, what will that say about us as humans. That we have no guilt killing and injuring animals Animals and humans are very different, but one thing we have in common is the fact that we can both feel emotions and comprehend the world in a different perspective. Professor Peter Singer says, “The fundamental issue in determining how we may treat animals is whether they suffer and that the pains of animals and humans deserve equal considerations.” Vertebrates, also know as animals with a backbone, have the same nerves that humans have to feel pain. We have a moral obligation to animals to protect their rights as creatures of this earth and members of our modern day society. I think some scientists know what they are doing is cruel but they don’t want to think that they are mistaken. We were meant to love and care for animals, not torture and abuse them. Animal testing is brutal and deprives animals of very minimal rights. Testing on animals can lead to inaccurate results harming both animals and humans. Living in the conditions that animals in laboratories do, is scarring for life and experimentations are harmful and cruel. Animal Testing is not necessary and wastes expert scientist’s time and work on unethical experiments with inaccurate outcomes. Humans have become conscienceless, but we can change that by saving innocent creatures from unimaginable harm. I hope that one day we will live in a world where it is not acceptable to abuse animals at all.
Every year over 100 million animals die in the US; the cause for these deaths, animal testing. This injustice to animals involves testing products such as medical drugs or makeup, on poor imprisoned animals that don’t have the ability to stand for their own rights as most of us do. Animals used for testing are given products that may result in burning, poisoning, or death. These animals are forced to live in confined spaces where they wait until the next horrible experiment. They are, tortured beyond imagination as they are sometimes even cut open while they are alive (know as vivisection), either with expired analgesics or even without them.
The roots of animal experimentation began in the early 1600s when the world expressed in interests on the functions of animals and their uses in human life. However, it wasn’t until the incident regarding the drug thalidomide in 1960 did the government make it a requirement for drugs be tested on animals. During the incident, millions of women took the medication believing that it would be a source of relieve from morning sickness, not knowing however that it would cause irrevocable effects on their unborn children (Watson 4). Although the ruling seemed to provide a sigh of relief to some, the very idea of placing animals in strange uncomfortable environments and experiencing pain and euthanasia angered many. According to the American Anti-Vivisection Society, commonly known as AAVS, It is wrong to treat animals as objects for the purpose of scientific research, and to cause them pain and suffering (“Animal Research Is Unethical and Scientifically Unnecessary”). Although the arguments against animal experimentation seem credible, animal testing on medicines and products are necessary in order to insure the safety of human beings.
One must remember that scientists who carry out animal testing are human to and most definitely do feel some sense of guilt using these animals for the sole reason to benefit mankind. However, “if there were good alternatives to animals that worked better or as well, for less money and hassle, scientists would use them” (Source D). Many believe that animals testing is wrong, but they must understand that at the current time there is no other option. It is difficult to find a different practice has been so substantial and has improved millions of lives and society as a whole. Animal testing, though the testing on animals may not be the best option, the after effects of testing has been successful over the past decades and will continue on this path as scientists and researchers gain more knowledge. Every person in this world should accept the fact that animals are living beings just like us. Additionally, every person should accept that animals are not ours to experiment on, to torture or kill them for our own purpose. It is a well-known fact that they are intelligent creatures and most important – they do have the ability to think, to feel anger and happiness, they want to make friends and to have life partners. Can you imagine the pain they feel when they are separated one from another or when they are simply excluded from the freedom to live only to die for cosmetics? Therefore, if we are against keeping people in captivity against their will, torturing them, doing cruel experiments on them and causing them to suffer and bleed to death then we should also be against animal testing. There are records of animals being used in biological and medicinal research as far back as 384 BCE with the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. Many people believe animal testing is unethical as it is bringing harm to animals in order to benefit humans. Ever since the beginning of this practice, animal testing has been used for a variety of purposes, all of which are inhumane and unethical.

Hurting an animal is better than hurting a fellow human being right? Well imagine a child being ripped away from his mother in today’s society, for no reason. Would that be considered okay, or kidnapping? Imagine humans being forced to breed, just so their children can be tortured for makeup or a new facial wash. Would that be considered okay, or morally incorrect? People do not see animals as fellow living things, because they do not have the power to say no like a person can. Today, millions of animals are being tested for the use of human products, causing them to fall ill and die, leaving them no choice but to be experimented on. Animal abuse can be more than what meets the eye. Specifically, animal testing is a form of animal abuse and usually ends in the death of a harmless animal. Some might say that there is no other way to test products, but due to the harm that is done and our advancements in science, animal testing should not be tolerated. Our advancements in science have enabled us to create other things that we can test on, instead of harming innocent animals.
Simple household items such as lotions, shampoos and cosmetics aren’t very expensive and are within reach for the public, yet the public is not knowledgeable of the fact that the products that they use everyday are put through a series of tests which involve the use of harmless animals. Several large commercial companies do not make products for animals; they decide that using these harmless creatures for the testing of their products, could be cause to be harmful to animals still go forward with these types of procedures on an everyday basis. Although these animals are unable to defend themselves or signs of any form of consent for the near death procedures, these companies find this as a cheap solution for testing their products before placing them on the market. There are many other alternatives to testing animals such as embryonic stem cell research. Animal experimentation is wrong and it can be avoided but companies which are greedy for money chose not to.
The fact that animals are still used when animal experimentation is avoidable and not necessary makes animal testing unethical. According to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (2013), over one hundred million animals suffer and sometimes die from experiments to test chemicals, drugs, foods, and cosmetics (para 3). Although it is good that the companies are concerned that their products do not harm consumers, the law does not require most of these tests animals endure. Furthermore, these tests do not have accurate results, so the animals may suffer, but the product is still sold to the people. While products that burn bunnies’ eyes away are being marketed to consumers, government agencies are using taxpayers’ hard-earned money to fund these horrible, pointless experiments.
As science advances further and scientists find new ways to gather research, society divides itself on the thought of whether animal testing is cruel. Are these tests cruel? Are these tests meant to intentionally hurt an animal? Testing can be painful for the animal, though it’s not meant to intentionally harm the subject. The research that is taken advances our knowledge of science and helps us learn about how are body changes, it finds the solution to curing diseases as well as discovering them, and gathers research to ensure the future of our well being is safe.
