Animal Testing Is Unnecessary

Poisoning, shocking, burning, and killing animals is all in a day’s work for many researchers. Animal experimentation has been a controversial debate for so long and continues to be. It is known to be the process of using animals to test the safety of medical, consumer and industry products. Many argue that animal experimentation is necessary because it provides “information that is vital to the medical community and human health in general,” (Gale) Some researchers state that animals have biological systems that are similar to humans and for that reason we use them as a guide to experiment and improve medical research. (Smith) However, in reality animal experimentation is unnecessary, it is inhumane, and is unethical, for reasons that it causes …show more content…

According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) “The majority of animal experiments do not contribute to improving human health, and the value of the role that animal experimentation plays in most medical advances is questionable.” This meaning that animal testing does not improve human health and that scientists use animals in medical research more as a matter of tradition. (Sylvia Engdahl) Also as stated in Results from Research on Animals Are Not Valid When Applied to Humans, “Differences between humans and animals in terms of our physiology, anatomy, and metabolism make it difficult to apply data derived from animal studies to human conditions.” As a result to this there is no prove that animal testing helps improve medical research. Since animals and humans don’t have many qualities in common, it is pointless to be experimenting on animals to obtain results. Therefore, scientists should find other ways to to test medical, cosmetic, food, and drug products. If scientist do …show more content…

According to Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, “Nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we cannot accurately predict how they will behave in people based on laboratory and animal studies.” Therefore, a lot of time, effort, and money is wasted and not only that but also animal lives are wasted when studies fail. It is also known that every year in the United States, animal experimentation can cost up to billions of dollars. (Sylvia Engdahl) This money usually comes from funding. The amount of money we invest in animal testing every year is a waste because sometimes experiment results are usually never accurate. If the results are usually never accurate then researchers should put a stop to animal testing. This would not only save lots of money, but it will also save time and effort that could be used to find other ways for medical
