The use of animals for research and experimentation is a very controversial issue. There are many benefits to animal testing but in the opinion of some there are negative outcomes from the use of animals. This topic has been debated for quite some time and continues to be a topic of discussion not only in the medical community but also for animal activists. In this paper, we will outline the advantages of animal testing. The use of animals for research and experimentation is critical for the advancement of modern medicine towards treating disease, developing vaccines and improving survival rates. Animals need vaccines too! In fact, many animals would have died from rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, infectious hepatitis virus, tetanus and anthrax if they were not used for testing vaccines. (1) Many animal rights supporters argue that we have enough information to stop using animals for testing. However, new diseases and infections arise as time moves on so it is important to continue animal testing so that we can help to combat these issues. There are both positive and negative arguments to the use of animal testing. However, the advantages outlined here far outweigh any negative outcomes to using animals as compared to testing on human beings. Animal research is necessary and important in this ever-changing world. It is our responsibility to balance the protection of these animals while at the same time preserving the human race. Not only is animal testing less expensive but the similarities between animals and humans lends itself to the discovery of many new treatments, medications and cures as well as prolonging life for both species.
