I like animals especially cats. Starting while I was still a kid, our family raised a wide variety of small animals. Always wanting to know the underlining meaning of animals movements, gestures, and facial expressions, I started to develop a guessing method of knowing what pets were trying to tell me. As time goes by, I became a self taught expert of animal behavior. My families and friends were amazed by my effort of trying to explain my understanding of small animals. However, after learning biology from my senior high school, I interested in science more than before. Having the background biological knowledge of cells, organs, and systems, I started to do research on specific animals as I was curious about how animals survive with their different systems. I chose Animals Sciences as my major after I was accepted by South China Agricultural University (SCAU). SCAU has the best animal science program in southern China. It was a pleasure to be involved in such activities, I also gained a greater appreciation of what working with animals can involve. For instance, I spent two years volunteering with SCAU Animal Science Department Red Cross Society. During that time, I was able to assist in a variety of practical tasks, including preparing the operating table, holding animals during injections, and recording their weight. Additionally, I had the chance to develop and implement an annual outreach plan that includes promotional and educational strategies. Growing up around animals, when I had the opportunity to join the Future Farmers of America (FFA) in high school, I took it and began developing my passion for agriculture at a young age. I am also a longtime member of a 4-H club as well, where I had even more opportunities to explore the agriculture industry. Through this and other things such as exhibiting livestock in fairs and shows around the state, I not only developed my passion for agriculture, but also discovered my college major and the career that I want to pursue after college.

Have you ever wondered where these new surgery procedures or medicines come from? When you think about all the major medical advancements over the last few decades and beyond, it has depended on animal research. As research moves into the future, we need to understand how the body works and how diseases progress. We need to find ways to treat, cure, or prevent disease and disability. The use of animal research is providing us with new technologies and medicines, which are benefiting both humans and animals in treating and extending lives.
Cats and dogs are fun to play with and fun to be around. However, some people go for snakes, birds, or rodents; most people usually prefer a four-legged animal like a cat or dog. How will animal research tell us the outcomes of the human body? How can we live longer and healthier lives with the use of animals? Do animals have a link to the human body that we are able to prove that trying new drugs or new cosmetics will be a benefit for us? I disagree. I believe we test on animals to figure out what are the possible outcomes for humans; however, the use of animals is cruel and unnecessary because they do not have a similar body system as humans do.
When the average person thinks about zoology, they usually think about a zoo and or animals. As said in General Zoology, many questions come with this topic. “What is life? In what ways are the various kinds of animals alike or unlike in structure, internal processes, and modes of life? How do animals carry on their activities? How are the many kinds related to one another? In what ways does man resemble and differ from other living things? The answers to many of these questions are provided by the science of zoology.” (General Zoology, page 3). While zoology does involve animals, the general study of zoology is far more complicated then one would imagine. Zoology is a branch of biology that studies the classification, origins, habitats and behaviors of organisms. Someone who studies zoology is a zoologist, and has the tasks of learning about new species and their habitats. It is a job that if mastered, can be one of the most fulfilling and knowledgeable careers someone can obtain.
Thousands of homeless animals are looking for forever homes in America. Volunteering is a great way to give to your community and socialize the animals at the shelters. Working with dogs and cats that have not had good starts in their lives helps them trust again. It helps animals get over the trauma they have had before they went to the shelter. Socializing makes the animal more adoptable and they are given a chance to get forever homes. Volunteer at your local humane society 's and help out the animals like I have worked with in shelters.
Instead of learning about volunteering from an indoor setting, I was able to first-hand experience volunteerism. I truly enjoyed being able to help my community while also earning credits by doing so. It was a win-win! If I had the opportunity, I would definitely take a class similar to this one. I will be transferring to the University of Kentucky and I am hoping that they will have some clubs/organizations that specialize in volunteering so that I can continue to help with the community. You will encounter some rough patches while volunteering, but that should never discourage you from continuing on. I know that at first while volunteering at MCHS, it was pretty strenuous. I hadn’t worked with any other animals other than my own and I had never volunteered at an animal shelter before, but everything ended up working out. I learned so much more about working with animals, gained people skills while working with other volunteers/adopters, and became more aware of my community’s needs.
