Animal Farm by George Orwell and the Truman Show by Peter Weir are very different texts but explore similar themes. Animal Farm is about a community of animals that overthrow a farm. The Truman Show is about a young man who was adopted at birth by a TV network and grew up in a reality Tv show. Animal Farm and the Truman show display three main themes through the two texts, They explore what a good life for an individual is and how the good life is displayed by them, It also explores what a good society is for a group and it finally explores the influence that power has through the texts.

Animal farm shows that a good life for an individual was happiness and didn't care about freedom as long as they were happy. Whereas the Truman show is different in how they show a good life for an individual as they show that having a good life is to have freedom to be able to make your own choice in your own life. The Truman Show shows what a good society is for a group by showing us that going beyond to help each other makes a good society whereas Animal farm shows differently in saying that if everyone has their own role and follows their role it will create a good society, but working as group to create things or make situations better is a better society. The final theme that Truman show and Animal Farm shows is a theme where the two texts have very similar thoughts on the influence of power. George Orwell displays that having so much power can become greedy and creates bad outcomes very similar to that of the Truman Show where Peter Weir also shows that having so much power comes greed and can also be controlling of others. These two texts show how far society has come and how different the two texts are but they both have very similar ideas on what makes a good life for an individual and society and for power and
George Orwell's goal in writing the novel Animal Farm was to portray the events surrounding the Russian revolution that took place in 1917. Orwell's tale of Animal Farm is seemingly a story of how a group of farmyard animals plot to overthrow their owner and seize control of the land. The novel seems to be a simple story, however Orwell wrote this book as an allegory, a story that has a clear secondary meaning beneath is literal sense. Everything in Animal Farm is used to represent people and events that took place during the Russian revolution from 1917-1939. Orwell chose to represent Russia's three famous leaders during this time with three pigs. Each three are drastically different and have dissimilar beliefs. Snowball representing Leon Trotsky, Napoleon by Josef Stalin and Old Major by Karl Marx. Orwell wrote this and many other books as warnings. The warning is that people must change their ways, or we are most surely doomed.

Power can be defined as the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events, each text flaunts ideas that support this, and how power can often be used to benefit the leader's life, and not the society’s, demonstrating how power can corrupt those who wield it. Orwell indicates this in Animal Farm, for example Napoleon uses his capacity to change the seven commandments given to the animals at the start of the revolution, he doesn’t change the commandments to offers other freedom, but to justify his actions. Napoleon selfishly alters the original slogan “all animal are equal” to “all animal are equal, but some are more equal than others” to improve his character, and ensure others understand how superior he is. Likewise, Weir suggests that power is often abused and taken advantage of, for one's benefit. Weir displays this when he uses Truman to create a television show about his life without Truman knowing. Christof does this to become successful in his career, to have no financial worries and eventually to become a well-known person. One may argue that Christof also tries to help Truman achieve happiness, as he creates the show around Truman’s life based on living the American dream: loving wife, white picket fence house and a 9-5 job, Christof claims he “knows you [Truman] better than you know yourself”. This is in contrast to Animal Farm, due to the fact that Napoleon does not do anything to benefit his “supporters”. Truman’s journey or ascension into the real world and into knowledge is similar to that of Plato’s cave dweller. This message is the underlying theme in the story and as such, will foreshadow Truman’s acceptance of a delusional reality in the film. The saying “history repeats itself” is used quite often, but how many times have you actually seen it happen? The book Animal Farm portrays the idea of history repeating itself. The character Benjamin and the pigs in the story show history repeating itself throughout the book. In addition to these characters within the book, North Korea displays history's repetition outside the book.
Although George Orwell’s Animal Farm was created in order to mimic individuals as well as occurrences that took place during the Russian Revolution period, it is still possible to gain a comprehensive understanding of the text without a past knowledge of history through the exploitation of human nature’s imperfections. It turns out Old Major talks about rebelling against man so that all animals can have a better life. Ironically, after Rebellion, no one except Napoleon has a better life and he makes their lives even harsher. This is a story of communism, this is the story of Animal Farm.
The sun rises. It’s a new day, soon to be filled with hard work. Animals are working hard, overcoming many difficulties by mere determination and work. But it all falls back to the way it was, going absolutely nowhere. In the book Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, this is exactly what happens. The animals work to tremendous extents, especially the horse named Boxer, but their hard work gets them nothing. They give their blunt work for years on a windmill that falls down twice, they work past specific difficulties in order to bring in the harvest that eventually leads them to lower food rations and, specifically, Boxer sacrifices his health for the sake of hard work to only be killed, as if he was nothing. Because the animals work hard to overcome struggles and difficulties but receive nothing good from it, it is clear that the theme in Animal Farm is that working hard can sometimes go nowhere.
Truman has a good marriage, a great job, and lives in a picturesque town. However, the ethics portrayed in the reality of “The Truman Show” are immoral because they are based on a society that has found norm in living in a world where the “perfect” life means happiness, spontaneous circumstances do not exists, and that there is no need to venture out into the unknown. Animal farm is a book about the struggle to be an animal. It shows how animals do not like the way they are treated by being used to do the humans work for them.
