Analyzing Success
Success is an incredible topic. A person could analyze success, successful people and similar ideas for decades and still not fully understand it. There are many layers and areas of success. As Google defines success, it is “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” With such a wide variety of people in the world, this definition could mean a million different things to a million different people. Success and it’s many virtues could change based on race, economic background, chance, talent, country of origin and many other variables. Some virtues of success that change person to person is the perspective of success, the evolution of success and the difficulties of success.

People often have to make sacrifices, often have doubts and are regularly pushed into difficult circumstances on their own course to success. Sacrifices are generally a given with great successes. The tremendous successes often come with equally as tremendous sacrifices. In the book The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, the lead character Tom makes quite the considerable sacrifice. Tom abandons his family without a source of income for them to keep their lights on and live. He does this in pursuit of a life of adventure and excitement. “I descended the steps of this fire escape for a last time and followed, from then on, in my father’s footsteps attempting to find in motion what was lost in space.” (Williams 97) He expresses some remorse as a result of this. He believes that his mother and sisters spirits follow him wherever he goes. “Then all at once, my sister touches my shoulder. I turn around and look into her eyes. Oh Laura, Laura, I tried to leave you behind me, but I am more faithful than I intended to be! I reach for a cigarette, I cross the street, I run into the movies or a bar, I buy a drink, I speak to the nearest stranger - anything that can blow your candle out.” (Williams 97) He is ultimately haunted by his choice to abandon his family. Although Tom is successful in his escape to a life of adventure he is wrought with guilt because of it and it haunts him, even in his new life. Another great difficulty in achieving success is doubt. The doubt a person has on whether they can accomplish a task can stop a person's success dead in its tracks. In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, the lead character Equality 7-2521 expresses doubt considering the cavern him and his friend have stumbled upon. Equality and his friend ‘International 4-8818’ have doubts on whether they should inform the council of scholars of the cave that they had recently discovered. “”International 4-8818,” we asked, “will you report
