Analyzing Cafe at Night Painted by Vincent Van Gogh I have chosen to write my paper on painting titled “Café at Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. Since this picture is a very popular one, I might have seen it a couple times before I actually decided to write about it. I feel warmth, streaming out of it, when I take a look at the “Café at Night”. This comfortable feeling made me select this artwork. This picture shows a cobbled street, probably somewhere in the south of Europe, at night. In the very front there is just the street, and in the left corner there is the edge of a building that is painted in dark blue. It looks like there is no light coming out of this building, and it does not seem to be very important for the view, Van Gogh caught for this image. Next to the dark building another one is shown. This building is wider and thus reaches more in the back and middle of the whole painting. Different yellow shades light the building up which shows that it is busy, people are most likely in there. Wayne, transforms this painting into a three dimensional abstract piece of art. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. Also in the way that the colors in the background are present he is showing that no matter how dark our day can be always will be light to
Images that have the ability to induce physical sensations are often the most sought after. A painter that has the ability to induce these sensations is Jonas Lie, with his painting Dusk on Lower Broadway. The painting Dusk on Lower Broadway is a timely piece that exhibits a diverse mixture of artistic concepts and techniques, using quick short brushstrokes with dark, cold colors to create an atmosphere of Dusk on Lower Broadway. In Dusk on Lower Broadway, Lie depicts the average life of a New Yorker bustling down Lower Broadway on a winter’s afternoon. The painting was created so that the observer is looking at the tall buildings in the background of the painting which, from the viewer’s perspective, are towering above all of the other figures in the painting.
There were rays of sunlight that were depicted as well. The light in the painting seemed to be focused in the middle, where the stream was. Other areas and parts of the piece were dark or darker than the area in the middle. I think that a trick with shading or lighting was used. Perhaps, it was tenebrism.

The painting express creative drive that they give form to immaterial ideas and feelings (this is relevant to abstract art). Since the author had mental health issues during the creative process of the painting I believe, he didn’t just used art and beauty themes to express his paintings, he wanted to show the world what he was feeling inside. Although, many people can view this painting’s major theme as Art and Beauty, I also viewed it as Art and Spiritual Belief. The reason why is because according to Sayre, Gogh wrote a letter to his brother by saying: “My paintings are almost a cry of anguish.” Gogh utilized a variety of colors on the spectrum, giving his paintings life. He often used the art style of Impressionists in that his paintings are depicted as he sees fit, and not how they are naturally viewed. Vincent Van Gogh is celebrated today as the greatest Dutch painter, besides Rembrandt (“Vincent Willem”). Born in Holland on March 30, 1853, Van Gogh had five other siblings and two parents, and although his mother was an artist, he never bothered with art until much later in his life (“Vincent Willem”). Van Gogh had many shortcomings in his little and dismal time on earth and it was not until his late twenties, after all else had failed, that he gave art a chance. Thanks to the help of his older brother Theo, Van Gogh was able to put all of his emotions and mental worries into productive use, creating masterpieces that are sold today for millions of dollars (“Vincent Willem”). Although he is hugely successful today, Van Gogh had little to no fame in his lifetime and he struggled immensely with his mental state of mind for many years. Ultimately his mental illness (some believe there were more than one) lead to his untimely death, but his turbulent state of mind also helped him to create magnificent images that are revered as some of the greatest pieces of art of today.

However in her interpretative poem she found a perspective of the painting that connected with her. As she used every stroke of darkness painted into the canvas an opportunity to have it symbolize this darkness and evil that resides in the world. It told her story and her experience of a starry night. Similarly Van Gogh had used every stroke of light painted into the canvas to be a symbol of beauty, and a symbol of his fascination of the night sky and its illuminating lights. He uses swift movements of his brush to depict a sky that seem to be able to sweep the mind away from the frustrations of this world in to the dreamy night light. A single painting worth a million words tells many stories through every perspective.

In Office in a Small city, the viewer is looking through a side window of a plain utilitarian building of a solitary man in a corner office. The highrise the man currently occupies is unassuming. Its color a soft white. The only decorative feature of this highrise is the front. Two other buildings can be seen. Another highrise, with apparently no windows, is similar to the one that the man occupies. The other building that occupies the rest of the space, is reminiscent of a time before the rise of skyscrapers. It stands out as unique and more human when compared with the other structures in this painting. The office that man sits in is bare, nothing hangs on the walls and the interior is the same drab color of the outside building. The windows of this office aren't framed. The few things that occupy this corner office is a couple dull brown colored desks and chairs and the solitary man. They might not be very prominent, but they exist the painting and serve as the base for creation. For starters, the window pane contains lines that highlight its simple design. Simplicity remains as the core of this work. Moreover, sill is roughly represented by a thick brown line underneath the window as a boundary in a quietly brilliant fashion. The work has a wonderful color allocation to express the mood. The color is limited within the muted palette color range. Grey—the intermediate color of black and white, is the dominate color for both exterior view and the interior part, as a matter of fact, the observer notices that nearly all colors are mixed instead of natural this work. The cloudy sky corresponds to the grey color of the wall, yet the brightness is not influenced. However, this consistency has successfully created a cold, grave and silent environment for a crowded place such as New York. This painting by Vincent Van Gogh is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum, in the Impressionism exhibit. There are many things going on in this painting that catch the viewer’s eye. The first is the piece’s vibrant colors, light blues and browns, bright greens, and more. The brush strokes that are very visible and can easily be identified as very thick some might even say bold. The furniture, the objects, and the setting are easy to identify and are proportioned to each other. There is so much to see in this piece to attempt to explain in only a few simple sentences.
Van Gogh had sympathy for the peasants and furthered his passion for humanity. He studied them non-stop to explore their world. The color palette he chose was dark and crudely painted on, almost grungy. It’s a low-lit kitchen area, with the look and feel of exhaustion that the dark color palette engages the viewer to feel what is going on.
In conclusion, Van Gogh used the elements above to create a man by himself in a field. He used color to represent feeling rather than represent realism of an event. The cool colors represent the field and happiness in his work. The warm colors represent the harshness of the day and could be a metaphor for life. He used scale and proportion to emphasis the overbearing sun. He also used proportion and scale to represent literally and figuratively how far away home was. The linear perspective was only evident to me after I really studied the used of lines. I followed the lines to the horizon and left side of the painting.
In this essay will be talking about and comparing between the traditional painting Starry night by Vincent Van Gogh and the digital movie poster for Midnight in Paris designed by the company Cardinal Communications USA. Starry Night is an artwork that was painted in 1889 in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provience, France while the Midnight in Paris poster is digitally made somewhere in the USA by someone in that company sometime in 2010. While both these artworks are very different, they have some similarities.
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
