The purpose of The Epic of Gilgamesh serves as a testament to humanity through relationships and losing those relationships. The poem attempts to answer the universal question of what happens to us after death. The archetypal patterns of a struggle, ally, threshold crossing and redemption establish the value of friendship, lessons on pride and how to keep history alive. Blessed as he was by the gods Gilgamesh’s quest for immortality was unattainable. However wisdom acquired through this journey of love and loss of friendship Gilgamesh secures his mortality.

He would however be a great ruler with no equal and would be victorious in any battle. Unsatisfied that his reign had secured his destiny he would embark on a long difficult journey to challenge and evil giant “I will set up my name in the place where the names of famous men are written and where no man’s name is written yet I will wise a monument to the gods”. (Saunders 7) The journey will set in motion a series of events that challenges Gilgamesh’s thoughts on mortality. Through the forest each character doubts if they’ll have what it takes to Humbaba. Each time they summon courage in the other “when two go together each will protect himself and shield his companion and if they fall they leave an enduring name” (Saunders 9) They are telling each other together we can do anything. After defeating the beast there is a moment when Gilgamesh can spare Humbaba’s life “O Enkidu, should not the snared bird return to its nest ant the captive man return to his mother’s arms? Enkidu, the one created to teach Gilgamesh compassion, tells him there will be no glory in sparing Humbaba. When a spiteful Ishtar sends the Bull of Heaven to kill Gilgamesh for rejecting her proposal the two men succeed at killing the beast. But killing this animal angers the gods and Enkidu must sacrifice his life for the death of the Bull of
