Analysis of the Film The Mission The movie analyzed in this paper is The Mission. This movie contains several sociological aspects and concepts. The concepts most easily identified are the ones that will be discussed in the following pages of this paper. Those concepts are Social Inequality, Deviance, and Subcultures. Social inequality is the social differences that exist whenever one group of people has different access to the rewards a society offers. Deviance is a variation from a set of norms or shared social expectations. Finally subcultures are groups of persons who share in the main culture of a society but also have their own distinctive values, norms, and life styles. These three concepts are clearly recognizable and are the concepts most prevalent in storyline of the movie. MOVIE DESCRIPTION The Mission starts out in a very interesting and unique way. The movie starts out with the priest who is to decide the fate of the Missions in the movie. He is writing a letter to the King to explain his decision for no longer protecting the Missions. As he writes this letter he goes back through all the things that he witnessed during the trial over the Missions. From the beginning if you listen to his words it is clear that he made a decision contrary to his personal belief but according to the influences of his society. Also in the beginning of the movie the first action seen is the Guiane Indians tying a Jesuit priest to a cross and sending him down an enormous waterfall. These two opening scenes set the stage for the rest of the movie. Soon after the discovery of the dead priest Father Gabriel climbs the waterfall to make another attempt to bring the word of God to the Guiane Indians. He is successful in r... ... middle of paper ... ...e Mission physically and through what they were taught. CONCLUSION I felt that this movie was very interesting and entertaining. It was also very sad. I think that the social inequality was the most prevalent thing in the movie because it was clear how the ruling class thought of the Indians. There was also a great gap between the rich and the poor. I also like the character of Roderigo and the deviance he brought to the movie. He was almost his own subculture in a way. It never really seemed like he followed any sort of norm or shared belief. I think he just did what his heart told him to do. It is also interesting that he is a deviant in different situations depending on what point of view you are using. I would definatly recommend this movie to anyone. It is a true story of the inequality that took place and is very sad yet important to know.
Chicanos and Chicanas are often stereotyped by people based on crude and unfair assumptions but at the same time, these stereotypes are often based on the truth. Movie directors are no exception as they attempt to understand and give representation to entire Chicano/a and Latino/a culture in society. The trailer of the film, La Mission, Che seems to be happy with his life until he realizes his son, Jes, is gay. Che then finds himself in a struggle to accept the homosexuality of his son while at the same time, Jes is struggling to find his own identity and to fit into society. The trailer has distinct ways in how it represents and shows the intersection and issues of gender and sexuality, race and ethics, as well as class. The trailer represents
This film represents our indigenous culture and regardless of what happens we can find good in a situation. Together the black and white community can come together and achieve more than they could ever do by themselves.
My group chose the movie, The Hunger Games, because we felt like it represented clear differences between today’s society and the society in the movie. This movie offers different mindsets and ideas compared to today’s modern society. For instance, the concepts of socialization, politics, and government are different in the movies society. In addition, the United States also does not select two members to compete to the death, nor split up groups according to power and wealth. Our government also does not allow the deviance like the movie does. The social changes are a huge factor as well in the movie. These are just a few concepts of sociology that will be discussed by the group that touch upon major cultural differences.
We’ve gone over many sociological concepts in class, but the three that I believe apply the most to this film are socialization, deviance, and resocialization. “What sort of world is it at
...e is different inequality socially and politically. The inequality is determined by people’s ideals of what they were taught and society projects as the superior and inferior races. This film shows that there is a way to change that if you make the other side see how they affect the people they are discriminating against. It is the responsibility of the adults to stop these learned behaviors and teach the children that people are all equal, that is what needs to be instilled in the generations to come otherwise everything will stay the same. We have come a long way as a people but we still have a long way that we need to go. Nothing will ever be perfect but it should always get better. The lesson that is learned from this workshop is lessons that should be taught in every classroom all over the world maybe then we will see that we are no different from each other.
This is such a good conflict, which made the movie more interesting to watch and you always waited to see what the Indians were going to do next.
In my sociology analysis essay I will be discussing Menace II Society. There are five concepts that I will define and use to show a broader vision of scenes from the movie which are: master status, differential association, self-conflict, stereotyping, and street crimes. Also, there will be two theories I will be discussing about the movie which are symbolic interaction theory and social conflict theory.
.... The action flows so seamlessly between the two elements that they often seem like aligned narratives rather than a mise-en-abîme. This flawlessness is used as a great outcome, further emphasizing that human cruelty is nothing new. It's easy to forget that Atuey, Columbus, Las Casas, Montesinos, etc. are actors playing roles-within-roles because they seem just as "real" as Costa, Sebastian and Daniel. The film's entire cast is incredible, but the star was Juan Carlos Aduviri, he gave both Atuey and Daniel distinct identities with a few common traits. Daniel and Atuey are both forthright rebels, but they have dissimilarities and (including living centuries apart). As an activist for morality and equality who believes in speaking truth to power, I found Even the Rain especially impactful. This film is certain to inspire many of us to keep fighting for what is right.
Did this film have any similarity with any of your own cultural experiences (food, family, values, experiences, religion, symbols)? Please Describe, Compare and/or Contrast with details/examples. Minimum 100 original words. 5 points possible
The purpose of this paper is to analyze a movie and list five sociological concepts outlined in our textbook, Sociology A Down-To-Earth Approach, 6th edition by James M. Henslin, which was published by Pearson Education, Inc in 2015, 2013, and 2011. I have chosen the movie, “The Breakfast Club.” This is a 1985 movie directed by John Hughes. It is about five high school students that have detention on a Saturday for nine hours. The five students are played by, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, and Anthony Michael Hall. These five students are deviant in their own particular ways and have different stereotypes. Eventually the students share personal information about their
The concept of culture refers to the perceived generation to generation and is somewhat durable. To call such behavior cultural does not necessarily mean that it is refined, but rather means that it is cultured. Hence it has been acquired, cultivated and persistent. Social scientists have invented the notion of a subculture to describe variations, within the a society, upon its cultural themes. In such circumstances, it is assumed that some cultural prescriptions are common to all members of society, but that modifications and variations are discernible within the society.
I have always believed that all races have their good and bad. Their is never going to be the perfect race. This movie definitely set a powerful message that life is not perfect for any race and that even though people are from different cultures, they are all interconnected somehow. The filmmakers did a great job at showing us that individuals should not be based on first impressions such as skin color or the social status.
“The Mission” is based on a true story that occurred around the borderlands of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil in the years 1750’s according to the film and history. The Treaty of Madrid of 1750 with the Spanish and Portuguese caused both havoc and death for the people of the Guarini and the members of the Jesuits. The Jesuits, members of the church, tried to bring Christianity and civilization to the natives while keeping at peace with Spain and Portugal. The Jesuits were the teachers for the natives; Teaching them not only the Christian religion but also civilization. Father Gabriel, a Jesuit, is first introduced in the film when he is showing his respects to a former Jesuit priest killed by the natives. He walks through the South American
Based on a true story, the movie ‘Lone Survivor’ features four Navy SEALs that set out on a mission to Afghanistan with orders to capture and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. The Navy SEALS are detected by villagers and the mission was compromised. Ultimately, the mission had been discovered and the men found themselves surrounded by dozens of Taliban soldiers. One of the Navy SEAL soldiers managed to dispatch to base and retrieve assistance but the Taliban shoot down the helicopter. During battle, three of the Navy SEAL soldiers were killed leaving one still alive.
The movie takes a small look at a few individuals and takes a more personal but also satirical look at the old west. The film shows the truth of the old west, that it was a place where violent, uncomplicated men were the ones who built the culture and towns. The director just likes his main hero also took a morally grey approach to creating his movie. Where he emphasis how war and violence created some of the cultures of the American West. The movie really goes deep into the lifestyle of cowboys focusing on the greed and violence that can sometimes accompany such a lifestyle while also using the Civil War as a backdrop. Although panned by critics during its initial release today the films remain universally loved and is considered one of the greatest western movies of all time. I think this is because it takes a realistic and satirical approach to both cowboys and the western Civil War time period. Despite its shortcomings during its release and the limitation due to the technology of the time. The film over the years has managed to become a western classic that is surprisingly smart and witty, while also managing to keep its message
