Analysis of Beloved
Beloved is actually a quintessentially American story. Its topic slavery however may not seem to be a traditional one in American literature. The novel written by Toni Morrison is an American survivor’s tale, which depicts the collective experience of slavery defined by the identity of the black community in America for years. The topic of slavery continues to be a vital part of the American consciousness today,in addition, slavery as an institution was a part of American culture as a whole until the Civil War, and its repercussions on race relations are still being felt today. The genre of the survivor's tale is one way that contemporary authors can depict and discuss this formative American experience.
‘Beloved’ is the tale of Sethe, a survivor of slavery, and her family. Sethe is an escaped slave who made the split second decision to kill her daughter, rather than have her return to a life of enslavement. The entire novel revolves around this horrific act; the entire story is slowly unraveled through the remembrances of Sethe and others. These memories and "re-memories" do not follow chronological order. However, when they are all pieced together, the whole picture of slavery, Sethe's act, and its aftermath emerges.

From the kiss on Sethe’s neck, to her new born child reenactment, Sethe succumbs to the job of a mother and tends to her, unaware of the fact that she is losing her health and strength in the process. Beloved is given the best of things from her mother such as food, and when there is nothing else left to give, “Beloved invented desire” (Kochar). Beloved at first seems like the victim in the novel due to the idea that she is supposedly the reincarnation of Sethe’s murdered child, but towards the end of the story Sethe becomes victimized by Beloved and her numerous desires. Sethe grows thin and weak while Beloved grows pregnant and healthy. Although Beloved may be portrayed as only the antagonist in the novel, she also symbolizes an intervention since she leads the characters to understand their pasts and in the end exposes the meaning of community.
Beloved is a movie full of pain, love, and triumph. This film is constructed and created from the works of Toni Morrison’s novel. Beloved can be considered a ghost tale based on how the main character Beloved magically appears and disappears with no warning signs. The movie takes place in the summer of 1865 in Ohio at 124 Bluestone Road in a little white house on a plate of land.
The 1950’s novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, revolves around a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield who is expelled from school and decides to spend a few days in New York before he goes home. The shift of no longer being a child, but not quite being an adult is present in the novel. As Holden narrates his difficult transition to adulthood, it becomes clear he is puzzled by the changes around him. Throughout the novel, Salinger uses characterization and symbolism to show Holden’s fear about entering the confusing adult world.
Both Beloved by Toni Morrison and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe are popular works of literature in African and African American culture. Both books are diverse and provide an inside look into the African and African American cultures. Beloved involves a group of characters that have dealt with slavery, losing family members, and being free and trying to learn how to live in society. Slavery induced negative effects on everyone who went through it and destroyed families. The main character Sethe deals with the past decisions see made, one major decision involves killing her baby and seeing her ghost years later. Past and present memories are explained in the book showing what the main characters went through. Things Fall Apart involves the people of Umuofia experiencing changes and challenges when Christian missionaries come into their land. The main character Okonkwo represents a fearless, tough leader with integrity for his tribe. He experiences death and mistakes and is banished from his tribe, but upon his return he finds his tribe has been invaded. His tribe experiences colonization by the missionaries and ends up falling in the end. Both novels involve black individuals having to overcome obstacles and finding ways to live in their own societies. Both novels deal with the issue of Parent-child relationships. In Beloved, Sethe with her children, Beloved and Denver. In Things Fall Apart Okonkwo deals with is son Nwoye. They also deal with inter-racial relations. Lastly, they both deal with gender relations. Both Beloved and Things Fall Apart demonstrate the circumstances individuals went through regarding, parent-child relations, inter-racial relations, and gender relations in there own manner.
In Beloved, Toni Morrison sought to show the reader the interior life of slavery through realism and foreshadowing. In all of her novels, Toni Morrison focused on the interior life of slavery, loss, love, the community, and the supernatural by using realism and vivid language. Morrison had cast a new perspective on the nation’s past and even suggests- though makes no promise- that people of strength and courage may be able to achieve a somewhat less destructive future” (Bakerman 173). J.D. Salinger presents Holden Caulfield as a confused and distressed adolescent. Holden is a normal teenager who needs to find a sense of belonging. All though Holden’s obsession with “phonies” overpowers him. Dan Wakefield comments, “The things that Holden finds so deeply repulsive are things he calls “phony”- and the “phoniness” in every instance is the absence of love, and , often the substitution of pretense for love.” Holden was expelled from Pencey Prep School not because he is stupid, but because he just is not interested. His attitude toward Pencey is everyone there is a phony. Pencey makes Holden feel lonely and isolated because he had very few friends. Holden’s feeling of alienation is seen when he doesn’t attend the biggest football game of the year. His comments on the game: “It was the last game of the year and you were supposed to commit suicide or something if old Pencey didn’t win” (2, Ch. 1). This also hints to Holden’s obsession with death. Holden can’t find a since of belonging in the school because of all the so-called phonies. Holden speaks of Pencey’s headmaster as being a phony. Holden says that on visitation day the headmaster will pay no attention to the corny-looking parents. Holden portrays his not being interested by saying, “all you do is study so that you can learn enough to be smart enough to buy a goddam Cadillac someday, and you have to keep making believe you give a damn if the football team loses”(131, Ch. 17). Holden does not care for school or money. He just wants everyone to be sincere and honest.

In the very last segment of the novel, the narrator notes that finally "they forgot [Beloved]. Like an unpleasant dream during a troubling sleep" (290). Sethe no longer represses history but actually lets it go. As a result, Beloved becomes nothing more than "an unpleasant dream," suggesting that she does not exist as a real person, but rather has no substance as a mere fantasy or hallucination which has no value to the community or to Sethe, Denver, or Paul D. Sethe moves on with her life as she has already faced the past, tried to make amends for her mistakes, and finally realizes her own value in life.
How would one feel and behave if every aspects of his or her life is controlled and never settled. The physical and emotional wrought of slavery has a great deal of lasting effect on peoples judgment, going to immense lengths to avoid enslavement. In the novel, Beloved, Toni Morrison uses the characters adversity to expose the real struggles of slavery and the impact it has on oneself and relationships. Vicariously living through the life of Sethe, a former slave who murdered one of her kids to be liberated from the awful life of slavery.
In Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, Morrison uses universal themes and characters that anyone can relate to today. Set in the 1800s, Beloved is about the destructive effects of American slavery. Most destructive in the novel, however, is the impact of slavery on the human soul. Morrison’s Beloved highlights how slavery contributes to the destruction of one’s identity by examining the importance of community solidarity, as well as the powers and limits of language during the 1860s.

In her novel Beloved, Toni Morrison explores the paradoxical nature of love both as a dangerous presence that promises suffering and a life-giving force that gives the strength to proceed; through the experiences of the run-away slave Sethe. The dangerous aspect of love is revealed through the comments of Paul D and Ella regarding the motherly love of Sethe towards her children. Sethe's deep attachment to her children is deemed dangerous due to their social environment which evidently promises that the loved one of a slave will be hurt. On the other hand, love is portrayed as a sustaining force that allows Sethe to move on with her life. All the devastating experiences Sethe endures do not matter due to the fact that she must live for her children. Although dangerous, Sethe's love finally emerges as the prevalent force that allows her to leave the past behind and move on with her life.
The film Beloved was released in 1998 to mixed reviews. The movie, based on Toni Morrison's novel, tells a ghost story from an African American perspective. It takes place only a few years after the abolishment of slavery, with the traumatic scars still fresh and unable to be healed. In the film the protagonist, Sethe, is revisited by the ghost of the daughter she murdered eighteen years earlier. I shall argue that her daughter, Beloved, is the embodiment of the trauma of the African American experience of slavery. In order to support this claim, I will explain what constitutes historical trauma in film, how historical trauma is specifically represented by the character Beloved, as well as how this film becomes a teaching device for the American nation about this trauma as a whole.
