Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

Last year the NCAA hauled in a gigantic $11 billion in annual revenue from college sports, more than the estimated total league revenues of both the NBA and the NHL. In the past few years many people have been asking whether or not these college athletes should be paid to play their sport in college. College should receive a share of the money because they can’t get a job, need money to provide for themselves, and need money to provide for themselves later after they are out of college. College athletes can’t get a job because they got to worry about their sport and academics. College football players are said to spend an average of 43.3 hours a week on their sport, playing games, practicing, and training in the weight room compared to 38 hours on academics. Men’s Basketball, was slightly more than 39 hours on their sport vs. 37 plus on academics. That’s compared to working 2 full time jobs. The thing that gets to people is that they’re not getting paid for either of those jobs. They can’t get a job because they have practice and studying to do. Colleges don’t need to hand out 100’s of thousands of dollars to athletes but enough for them to make a living like maybe 20k should go to the athletes. There have been incidents where athletes go to bed starving. Like UConn guard Shabazz Napier he told reporters that he sometimes goes to bed “Starving” because he can’t afford food. The response he got from Rep. Matthew Lesser was “He say’s he’s going to bed hungry at a time when millions of dollars are being made off of him. It’s obscene” so giving athletes a little bit of money to get food would do the athletes a huge
