Vignette and Cognitive-Behavioral Family Therapy Conceptualize Family’s Members Cognitive-Behavioral Family Therapy (CBT) emphasizes on modifying parent’s behavior and improving communication skills. According to Nichols (2013), “Consequences that accelerate behavior are reinforcers; those that decelerate behavior are punishers” (p. 186). For example, Gladys’ behavior will be regulated by using reinforcements or punishment. The CBT theoretical formulation focuses on the whole family. “As behavior therapist shifted their attention from individuals to family relationships, they came to rely on Thibaut and Kelley’s theory of social exchange, according to which people strive to maximize rewards and minimize costs in relationships” (Nichols, …show more content…

“To accelerate behavior, the premack principle is applied; that is, high-probability behavior (popular activities) is chosen to reinforce the behavior with a low probability of occurrence” (Nichols, 2013, p. 192). For instance, the parents need to take away something that Gladys enjoys doing like watching TV, listen to music, and much more. The assessment will include to seeing how each family member expresses their thoughts to each other. “Based on information provided by the clients, a therapist can select an unresolved issue in the family and ask them to spend ten minutes or so discuss it while the therapist observes or perhaps videotape” (Nichols, 2013, p. 198). For instance, I will identify the limitations that Mary has because of her ovarian cancer. Also, the family members need to be able to express their feelings without attacking each other and causing drama. “Epstein and Baucon describes helping clients learn to set clear, behavioral goals without attacking other families members’ ideas, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each proposed solution, and then selecting a solution that appears to be feasible and agreeable to all” (p. 201). For example, Mary’s learn to express their concern with what Gladys is doing with her life.
