Abstract: The research provides a thorough overview of design and analysis of chassis and suspension system assembly of heavy vehicles. The chassis is a steel frame, supported on the springs attached to the axels that holds the body of a automotive vehicle. Suspesion is a system of springs, shock absorbers ,that connects the wheels to the vehicle that allows the relatives motion between them. Suspension system provides a dual purpose of vehicle road holding and handling for good activie safety. The fem analysis has been carried out with different alternatives. The result illuminate the new creative ways for optimum frame design.which makes more sustainable and structural concern. The chassis and suspension system is assembly is modelled …show more content…

Introduction: Chassis is a French word which was originally used to denote the frame part but now has an extended list of components. Vehicle chassis is a major sub assembly in building an automobile. It is also known as backbone of automobile. The chassis includes frame, engine, clutch, gear box, propeller shaft, universal joints, differentials, axels, wheels, steering ,brakes, fuel tank, suspension system etc.

Chassis frame: Frame is the most important component of the chassis. Depending upon the arrangement of the frame with the body, following are the types of chassis frame.
Conventional frame: A separate frame is used on which all the chassis components are mounted in the body.
Sub-frame:
A smaller frame is used on which a few major components are mounted
The sub frame is mounted on the frame.

Frameless construction:

A floor structure having side member, cross members alongwith body are all welded together as one assembly …show more content…

The frame is upswept at the front and rear to accommodate the movement of axles and wheels during springing This also helps in keeping the chassis height low. The longitudinal members are connected such that the frame is narrowed down at the front.

This is to have smaller turning radius and better steering lock.
Mounting brackets are provided at the sides of longitudinal members to support the body. Dumb iron pins are provided for mounting of suspension springs.
The cross section of longitudinal members can b of following types
1) Solid round or rectangular cross section.
2) Enclosed thin wall hollow round or rectangular box section.
3) Open thin wall rectangular channel section such as C,I, etc. The channel section (both C and I) have higher bending stiffness as compared to solid square bar with equal cross section area. Considering the bending stiffness of solid square section as 1, the relative bending stiffness of other sections are:
1) Solid square bar: 1.0
2) Solid round bar : 0.95
3) Hollow circular section :4.3
4) Rectangular C- section :
