I know what it is like to get verbally bullied by my other peers. From elementary all the way through middle school I was teased about being overweight. I honestly believe that I was a victim of bullying for such a long time because of failure to notify an educators and also because I did not feel as though as though my teachers paid enough attention to notice it. With me feeling like they were not attentive, I believed that if I did tell them about my situation that it would not make much of a difference, and that if it did make a difference that it would be for the worse. The amount of verbal bullying has remained rather constant over the last couple of years. The verbal abuse from the aggressor can do a lot of damage to the victim. It can affect the victim’s image, can take a toll on them emotionally and psychologically, and can also cause issues such as low self- esteem and depression. Recently, I have noticed a lot of bullying cases where a person is bullied so much verbally, that they chose to commit suicide. Free of any charges or statements of infraction on her criminal record, Taylor was introduced with a clean slate. Her parents made the decision to enroll her in a Christian school within the city in attempt to introduce her to new social groups who held the same beliefs and values as her family. Reluctant at first, and denying any offer of help, Taylor slowly began to build back the relationship with her parents. The school introduced many new opportunities to Taylor; she was encouraged to interact with new groups, participate in at least one extracurricular activity, and maintain at least a 60% grade average. With this push for improvement, Taylor grew increasingly aware of who she desired to be and underwent another identity change due to her new environment and social groups she was now interacting with. The opportunities presented from this institution allowed Taylor to experiment with hobbies and extracurricular activates as she joined the cast for the musical, began playing softball, joined the student union, and volunteered within a hospital. Most often you will find that it is mentally, but it can also go as far as to a person’s physical aspect. The bully does not have to lay one finger on you to cause you physical harm. For example, a young girl is constantly getting picked on because of her weight. She goes on to have an eating disorder and no one notices. The abuse eventually leads her to do self-harm to her body. Unfortunately, self-harm is more frequent in today’s world. We all think, “Why would you do that to yourself?” The answer is when you go out in public and constantly have someone just going at you and using language that should never leave a person’s mouth, it begins to have effects. For children, they want someone to hear them and understand. The predicament of bullying is important to me because I knew a classmate who committed suicide from enduring bullying. Rumors regarding him were spread like fire that lead to tormenting comments. He was bullied through the internet, received prank calls, and was yelled at from others while he walked the hallways. This situation should have received the needed attention to be resolved; however, through the constant teasing, he committed suicide to relieve the feelings of being bullied. Bullying can take lives.
In 8th grade I was being bullied without me knowing it. I had to find it out from a friend and it really hurt me but I had to put my brave face on and ignore it. It is especially hard when people make rumors about you when the rumor is completely incorrect.
I have been a victim of bullying since middle school. I have not lived in Ocala my entire life. I began my life in Medford, Long Island before moving to Ocala, Florida where I began sixth grade. Everyone at my middle school had grown up together. I believe that going into middle school, where friendships, and social groups had already began, had contributed to my bullying. The classes were small at my middle school, about fifth-teen to a class. This limited my ability to meet peers and make new friends, which lead to a social seclusion that left me exposed to bullying. Being bullied was terrible. I knew it as a child, I know it as and young adult, it absolutely was terrible.
The bullying in my own life, that affected my mental health personally, started when my father was diagnosed with cancer. Other kids in school were really rude about it, saying, “At least my dad doesn’t have cancer.” and other things of the like to rub it in my face, even though it wasn’t my fault. It made me feel like garbage, because at the tender age of ten, I barely understood what the words ‘terminal cancer’ meant.

I have been bullied all my life, I just took it from kids, clearly I did not have a backbone. For each school I attended, I was always the easy target. I let kids tease me, talk behind my back, and call me names. It seemed like it didn’t matter if I told my parents or someone at school, nothing changed. I never really felt that I could tell someone and have things be different. Due to all the teasing, I would often become distracted and lose focus on my assignments. It got worse each year to the point where half the time I would just be in my own little world to get away from the teasing.
