The Zodiac Killer is a serial killer who was linked to five killings in the Northern California area in 1968 and 1969. Although he claims he killed thirty-seven people, he can only directly linked to five deaths and two injuries. He targeted three women and four men between the ages of sixteen and twenty-nine. The Zodiac Killer taunted the police and made threats through the letter sent to Bay Area newspapers from 1969 to 1974. These letters written by the Zodiac Killer contained many ciphers, only one of them has been solved to this day. There have been many suspects in this case yet law enforcement has still not made an arrest connected to the case. One of the biggest reasons seems to be a need for sexual release. Sexual pleasure achieved only through violent acts was one reason why he killed couples. His hunt for his victims would be the “foreplay”, when he tortured and killed the victims, that was the sexual release. Greysmith stated that this was due to the fact that love and violence are somewhat intertwined. The Zodiac Killer is a sexual satanist, which means they have a tendency to be very intelligent and proficient at concealing their identity. There is no known reason why the Zodiac Killer might have been a sexual satanist, but doctors say a possibility could have been due to a loss sex chromosome, or an even rough early childhood. For most of the Zodiac Killers killings, he had a pattern. Couples were his main target, and he attacked them in isolated areas where he would not have witnesses. His pattern also included the need to confess to his murders to authorities. Overall, the Zodiac Killer’s pattern seems to be organized due to his same victim characteristics. His ability to commit crimes without witnesses and leave little psychical evidence at every crime scene is a way he was organized. For instance, when he killed Paul Stine, the police said that he wiped down the taxi in order for there to be no fingerprints. According to Lawrence Miller, the organized serial killer is often familiar with police procedures and takes great pride in thwarting investigations and taunting law enforcement officials by the careful placement or concealment of evidence.
