A Parallel World When I’m assigned a text to read, my first reaction is to search for deep analytical content, rather than to accept it at face value. However, when presented The Quadroons by Lydia Maria Child, I found myself enjoying it for what it is: A great story. I was extremely touched by relationships in the story and the strength portrayed by Rosalie. After forcing myself to dig a little deeper into the text, I discovered a lot of interesting aspects that are still relevant in the world today. The relationships between Rosalie, Edward, and Xarifa are as complex as, and similar to, the relationships of modern day. She had to watch her father leave her mother, and “the gloomy atmosphere of their once happy home overclouded the morning of [her] life” (187). She had to watch her mother suffer from a heartache that eventually killed her, and was then given a lifelong babysitter. It then seemed that Edward attempted to buy the love of his daughter with the promise of financial stability. It seemed as though he tried to buy his way out of guilt by employing the best educators for his daughter. Despite his efforts, he formed an unhealthy relationship with alcohol and met death after falling from his horse on route to see Xarifa. Because of these ill-fortuned events, Xarifa found herself thrown into a relationship with a man that she might not have otherwise pursued. Similarly, the children of the world today find themselves suffering as a result of their relationship with their parents. How involved a parent is in a child’s life constantly affects the way the child behaves and the actions they take. Lydia Maria Child’s The Quadroons paints an extremely interesting parallel situation of the struggles families experienced during the 1800s as well as modern day. Despite the varying circumstances, families of each time period endure hardships that affect the ultimate quality of their lives. Readers of modern times can use the happenings of The Quadroons to further understand the day to day struggles of modern
For the Kracha family, a slow rise to proud business ownership was ended by a series of events: (1) a summer of drunken abandon by Djuro; (2) his return to the steel mills (3) his daughter's (Mary) marriage to a fellow countryman also in the mills; and (4) his grandson's growing discontentment with unfair labor practices and abuses. These events in the Kracha family's lives become intertwined with the story of America's own transformation between the 1880s and the 1940s.
At a young age Lajoe, her parents and other siblings were the first family to move into the newly built Henry Horner Homes, a public housing high-rise project, on Chicago’s south side. Lajoe recalls how clean and spacious their apartment was then. As the years passed the city became less and less able to allocate funds to keep up with the repairs the buildings needed and the city seemed not to care. The projects became ran down, dank and to condense to support a large family. Lajoe became pregnant at the young age of fourteen and was unable finish her high school education.
Compared to people in the twenty-first century, with all their modern conveniences and technological advances, the life of any early-American seems difficult. However, the lives of children were among the most arduous. Linda Pollock states in her book Forgotten Children that between 1660 and 1800 families -and society in general- became more affectionate, child-oriented, and permissive of uniqueness and unstructured time (67). Although this may be true, many other sources depict the lives of children as taxing and oppressive at best. Children of the time were either forced to abandon education for their family contributions, or had to balance school with a full day's work ("Education"). Even when they were not in school or doing manual labor, their day-to-day lives were uncomfortable and harsh (Kids). Social status, as is expected, was a key factor in determining how hard a child's life would be (Murray 9). Although many children at the time had it easier than others they were all asked at an early age to take on adult responsibilities. The lives of all children in 1800 were mundane and difficult due to family and societal expectations for labor, schooling, and maturity.
Intergenerational conflicts are an undeniable facet of life. With every generation of society comes new experiences, new ideas, and many times new morals. It is the parent’s job go work around these differences to reach their children and ensure they receive the necessary lessons for life. Flannery O’Connor makes generous use of this idea in several of her works. Within each of the three short stories, we see a very strained relationship between a mother figure and their child. We quickly find that O’Conner sets up the first to be receive the brunt of our attention and to some extent loathing, but as we grow nearer to the work’s characteristic sudden and violent ending, we grow to see the finer details and what really makes these relations

It is interesting to see how Cable became riveted in Quadroon balls which is best represented in Tite Poullete and Madame Delphine but in all honesty, they captured the essence in New Orleans and many underlining issues that were taking place during this time. The quadroon balls represented both good and evil in many aspects, on a positive note they were a form of entertainment that reflected the unique culture of New Orleans. Here you have a unique City where all races and cultures merge, Cable called it a “Hybrid City” and to completely capture how the city became just that, would require a book but to some it up quickly, New Orleans, before it was sold to the united states was Founded by the French and under Spanish rule for Thrity five years after the Freancha nd Indian war, the coloney was returned to the French under Napoleaon, (degas17) and all of this occurred before the Civil War. New Orleans became a place that Indians, Africans and European settlers could come together and in some respects New Orleans seemed to be a more a way to be socially accepted due to the wide range of cultures that were then and now, intertwined. Unfortunately, where there are cultures intermingled there are will be conflicts and one of these was the interracial marriages and affiliation between black and whites. Due to the diversity, it was enviadalb that this would occur and the interworking’s of social customs such as slave trade and the system pf “Placage” once unmasked by Cable and his works, caused an uproar in New Orleans. The childhood of Frances Piper consists of inadequate love, loss of innocence and lack of concern, ultimately leading to her disastrous life. As a six year old child, she encounters several traumatic events, explicitly the death of her loved ones and the loss of her innocence. Over the course of one week, there have been three deaths, two funerals and two burials in the Piper family. “Frances was crying so hard now that Mercedes got worried. ‘I want my Mumma to come ba-a-a-a-ack.’”( McDonald 174). As a young child, there is nothing more upsetting than losing a mother. A family is meant to comfort each other to fulfill the loss of a loved one; however, this is not the case in the Piper family. Mercedes, only a year older than Frances, tries to console her even though she herself is worried. The loss of motherly love and affection has a tremendous impact on her future since now her sole guardian, James, expresses no responsibility towards her. Instead, he molests Frances on the night of Kathleen’s funeral to lessen the grief of his lost daughter. With each telling and retelling of Edward Bloom’s stories, the reader and William both gain a little more insight in the enigma who is Edward Bloom. Despite the resentment and anger that dominates William’s feelings for his father, his ability to strive to make peace and make sense of his mystifying father, who has always eluded his own comprehension, is significant to anyone who has ever felt disconnect with a dying family member.
Currently, families face a multitude of stressors in their lives. The dynamics of the family has never been as complicated as they are in the world today. Napier’s “The Family Crucible” provides a critical look at the subtle struggles that shape the structure of the family for better or worse. The Brice family is viewed through the lens of Napier and Whitaker as they work together to help the family to reconcile their relationships and the structure of the family.
Taylor and Lou Ann demonstrate a symbiotic relationship between the roles and characteristics in a family. Looking back on the death of Larissa’s son, Zebedee Breeze, Lorraine examines Larissa’s response to the passing of her child. Lorraine says, “I never saw her cry that day or any other. She never mentioned her sons.” (Senior 311). This statement from Lorraine shows how even though Larissa was devastated by the news of her son’s passing, she had to keep going. Women in Larissa’s position did not have the luxury of stopping everything to grieve. While someone in Lorraine’s position could take time to grieve and recover from the loss of a loved one, Larissa was expected to keep working despite the grief she felt. One of the saddest things about Zebedee’s passing, was that Larissa had to leave him and was not able to stay with her family because she had to take care of other families. Not only did Larissa have the strength to move on and keep working after her son’s passing, Larissa and other women like her also had no choice but to leave their families in order to find a way to support them. These three main characters defy society because of their strength. These books become timeless because of the female characters. Each novel defies the expectations of society in its own way. They exemplify women who rise above the average to become greater than what most people are. The novels show the female spirit in all its glory; they portray its strengths and ability to overcome obstacles.
