E.E. Cummings – " Pity this busy monster , man- unkind "

Both of the poems " Pity this busy monster , man-unkind" and " The world is too

much with us " convey the involving too much in the modern world of science and

forgetting the beauty of nature , which leads to the gap between the world of science

and the world of nature .

The poem " Pity this busy monster man-unkind " by E.E .Cummings is a modern

sonnet with 14 lines and a rhyme scheme – ABACDAEDECFGFG . The tone of the

poem is critical , sarcastic , complaining and optimistic .

The speaker of " Pity this busy monster , man-unkind" uses certain metaphors .

For example in the address " pity this busy monster , man- unkind " , the speaker

compares the modern worked man to a busy monster also the modern kind man to a

unkind man it's like he is not kind anymore .

The speaker uses the word choice oxymoron in line " not. Progress is a comfortable

disease " (2) , between the words comfortable and disease . It's weird how the

disease can be comfortable , the speaker means here that the scientific progress which

invents something new everyday considered as comfortable for daily life but also

considered as a disease to nature . Therefore the contradiction between the world of

science and the world of nature is represented by the oxymoron .

In line (4 ) " plays with the bigness of his littleness " , the speaker uses Alliteration

in the repetition of "s" to manifest sounds of chaos which the modern world creates .

Moreover the tone of the speaker is sarcastic through showing that the inventions of

the scientific modern world make the humans feel big but actually they are really little

blow his wreathed horn " (14) , the speaker uses the Allusion to Greek Gods through

Proteus and Triton in order to show a way in which the speaker can celebrate the

beauty of nature .

The differences between the two sonnets are firstly in the structure . The rhyme

schemes are different from each other . Secondly the speaker of the sonnet " Pity

this little busy monster describes the gap through the modern world in comparison

with the speaker of the sonnet " The world is too much with us " that describes the

gap through the nature more .Thirdly , the speaker of " Pity this little monster man

unkind " is optimistic while the speaker of " The world is too much with us " is

pessimistic .

The similarities between the two sonnets that both speakers deal with the involving

too much in the modern world and the alienation from the beauty of nature .
