E.E. Cummings – " Pity this busy monster , man- unkind "
Both of the poems " Pity this busy monster , man-unkind" and " The world is too
much with us " convey the involving too much in the modern world of science and
forgetting the beauty of nature , which leads to the gap between the world of science
and the world of nature .
The poem " Pity this busy monster man-unkind " by E.E .Cummings is a modern
sonnet with 14 lines and a rhyme scheme – ABACDAEDECFGFG . The tone of the
poem is critical , sarcastic , complaining and optimistic .
The speaker of " Pity this busy monster , man-unkind" uses certain metaphors .
For example in the address " pity this busy monster , man- unkind " , the speaker
compares the modern worked man to a busy monster also the modern kind man to a
unkind man it's like he is not kind anymore .
The speaker uses the word choice oxymoron in line " not. Progress is a comfortable
disease " (2) , between the words comfortable and disease . It's weird how the
disease can be comfortable , the speaker means here that the scientific progress which
invents something new everyday considered as comfortable for daily life but also
considered as a disease to nature . Therefore the contradiction between the world of
science and the world of nature is represented by the oxymoron .
In line (4 ) " plays with the bigness of his littleness " , the speaker uses Alliteration
in the repetition of "s" to manifest sounds of chaos which the modern world creates .
Moreover the tone of the speaker is sarcastic through showing that the inventions of
the scientific modern world make the humans feel big but actually they are really little

Proteus and Triton in order to show a way in which the speaker can celebrate the
beauty of nature .
The differences between the two sonnets are firstly in the structure . The rhyme
schemes are different from each other . Secondly the speaker of the sonnet " Pity
this little busy monster describes the gap through the modern world in comparison
with the speaker of the sonnet " The world is too much with us " that describes the
gap through the nature more .Thirdly , the speaker of " Pity this little monster man
unkind " is optimistic while the speaker of " The world is too much with us " is
pessimistic .
The similarities between the two sonnets that both speakers deal with the involving
too much in the modern world and the alienation from the beauty of nature .
In the poem “Self-Pity’s Closet” by Michelle Boisseu, the speaker’s main conflict is self pity, and the author used diction and imagery to show the effects that the conflict has on the speaker. Phrases like “secret open wounds,” (3) show the effects with the word “secret” meaning pain that others are not noticing, which leads up to the speaker getting hurt, but no one indicating to notice it. Another effect is the speaker becoming more self concerning and thinking more about her negatives. In “Useless Boys” the writer, Barry Dempster, creates a strong feeling of disappointment and shame in himself and society as he looks back on his youth to when him and a friend made a promise to each other to “not be like their fathers”. Dempster expresses a sort of disgust for the capitalist society his world seems to be built around, a life where even if you’re doing something you initially enjoyed you end up feeling trapped in it. The poem is a reflective piece, where he thinks back on how he truly believed he would end up happy if he chose a different path than that of his parents. The author uses simple diction and syntax, but it’s evident that each idea has a much deeper meaning, which assisted in setting a reflective/introspective mood.
Sylvia Plath was known as an American Poet, Novelist and Shorty story writer. However, Plath lived a melancholic life. After Plath graduated from Smith College, Plath moved to Cambridge, England on a full scholarship. While Plath was Studying in England, she married Ted Hughes, an English poet. Shortly after, Plath returned to Massachusetts and began her first collection of poems, “Colossus”, which was published first in England and later the United States. Due to depression built up inside, Plath committed suicide leaving her family behind. Sylvia Plath was a gifted and troubled poet, known for the confessional style of her work, which is how “Mirror” came to be. Although this poem may seem like the reader is reading from first person point of view, there is a much deeper meaning behind Plath’s message throughout the poem. Plath uses several elements of terror and darkness to show change to the minds of the readers.

There is something about the human spirit that causes us to rejoice in shared experience. We can connect on a deep level with our fellow man when we believe that somehow someone else understands us as they relate their own joys and hardships; and perhaps nowhere better is this relationship expressed than in that of the poet and his reader. For the current assignment I had the privilege (and challenge) of writing an imitation of William Shakespeare’s "Sonnet 87". This poem touched a place in my heart because I have actually given this sonnet to someone before as it then communicated my thoughts and feelings far better than I could. For this reason, Sonnet 87 was an easy choice for this project, although not quite so easy an undertaking as I endeavored to match Shakespeare’s structure and bring out his themes through similar word choice.

Analysis of Leroi Jones' A Poem Some People Will Have To Understand There is an implied threat in "A Poem Some People Will Have To Understand" by Leroi Jones. Ostensibly, there is no intimidation. The poem is confessional, even reflective; the theme is one of mutability and change. However, there is something frightening and ominous in Jones1 vision, which he creates through attention to word choice and structure. To begin, the poem, “Eve’s Apology,” uses many different poetic devices such as alliteration, assonance, rhyme scheme, and simile. The author uses a great number of alliteration, which is the repetition of constant sounds generally at the beginnings of words. Alliteration can be seen in the words “what” and “weakness” in line 3.
