Could a genocide mimicking Hitler’s rein of terror be right around the corner for society? Timothy Snyder, author of The New York Times op-ed “The Next Genocide,” insists that China or Russia could be the mastermind behind a future genocide. Snyder explains how Hitler’s idea Lebensraum, a core belief behind Nazi ideology, is encouraging the government of China to follow his footsteps. Lebensraum is when a country believes that the only way to expand trade or sustaining a large population is to take over other countries’ land. Snyder received his bachelor’s degree from Brown University and then received a doctorate degree from the University of Oxford as a Marshall Scholar, which is one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world, in 1997. He is an expert on the Holocaust and modern Eastern Europe politics which is why he is able to see patterns in China that is similar to Germany before the holocaust. Snyder divulges the hidden sufferings of people during the Holocaust and how it mirrors what is going on today, which makes the audience feel compassion. Most people are very sympathetic to pain because everyone has experienced it one time or another. This is the big idea that Snyder is trying to get across; the secret suffering and murder of innocent people due to governments ignoring science as a solution to their problems. The killing of human beings for monetary gain is a sensitive subject that Snyder delivers powerfully by manipulating the reader’s emotions. The United States is a big contributor to the ecological crisis throughout the world. They produce the most pollution; at the same time the majority of scientists from the U.S. do not believe in global warming. Americans, which is the main audience of the op-ed, must feel guilty for only adding to an increasingly large global issue. Climate-change is one of the biggest reasons why so many countries in Africa are suffering from extreme heat. This extreme heat reduces the amount of crops that can be produced which forces countries like China that depends on other countries for food to find other ways to obtain food which involve conquering other nations or even killing people for their food.
