The casts for this film entailed Meryl Streep, who played Violet as the psychotic mother; Sam Shepard, who played as Beverly, an alcoholic father; Julia Roberts, who was the oldest sister named Barbara; Ewan McGregor, who played Bill as Barbara’s husband; Abigail Breslin, played Jean, Barbara’s 14-year-old daughter; Violet's middle daughter, Julianne Nicholson, who played as Ivy; Violet’s youngest daughter Juliette Lewis, played as Karen; Margo Martindale, played Violet’s sister as Mattie Fae; Chris Cooper, who played Charles as Mattie Fae’s husband; and Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays “little Charles” is Mattie and Charles’s son. Ivy reveals that she cannot have children because she had a hysterectomy, and she feels that this is her only chance to finally marry. Barbara and Bill are separated, but they put up a front for Violet and the rest of the family. After the funeral, the family sits down to dinner and Violet wants to start a brutal "truth telling" conversation, which results in Barbara pouncing on her mother. Barbara jumps up from tackling her mother and decides she has had enough of her mother's drug addiction and confiscates all her pills and flushes them. Later, after Violet has had a chance to sober up, she has a tender moment with her daughters and shares a story that demonstrates how cruel her own mother was when she longed for a new pair of cowgirl boots when she was in her early teens. Later that evening, "Little Charles" sings Ivy a song that he has written for her, and in walks Mattie Fae into the room and instantly starts to belittle him. This makes Charles's irate and depletes his patience with his wife's lack of love and compassion for their son and threatens to leave her if she keeps it up. Mattie subsequently reveals to Barbara, who unintentionally listened in, that she had a long-ago affair with Beverly, and Charles is in fact their younger half-brother and that is the true reason Ivy and "Little Charles"
