Ivy reveals that she cannot have children because she had a hysterectomy, and she feels that this is her only chance to finally marry. Barbara and Bill are separated, but they put up a front for Violet and the rest of the family. After the funeral, the family sits down to dinner and Violet wants to start a brutal "truth telling" conversation, which results in Barbara pouncing on her mother. Barbara jumps up from tackling her mother and decides she has had enough of her mother's drug addiction and confiscates all her pills and flushes them. Later, after Violet has had a chance to sober up, she has a tender moment with her daughters and shares a story that demonstrates how cruel her own mother was when she longed for a new pair of cowgirl boots when she was in her early teens. Later that evening, "Little Charles" sings Ivy a song that he has written for her, and in walks Mattie Fae into the room and instantly starts to belittle him. This makes Charles's irate and depletes his patience with his wife's lack of love and compassion for their son and threatens to leave her if she keeps it up. Mattie subsequently reveals to Barbara, who unintentionally listened in, that she had a long-ago affair with Beverly, and Charles is in fact their younger half-brother and that is the true reason Ivy and "Little Charles"

They have eating disorders, stunted growth, weakened bones, depression, low self esteem, debilitating and fatal injuries, and many sacrifice dropping out of school. All hope is not lost because Violet assures her that she can be trained. She ends up succeeding at the company and telling her husband she will not take him back after he comes back begging for her love again.
In the movie, The Glass Castle, the young girl Jeannette Walls was played by three different actresses, Chandler Head, Ella Anderson, and Brie Larson, as she grew up throughout the film. Jeannette was the protagonist in the film and her parents, Rex and Rosemary, played by Actor Woody Harrelson and actress Naomi Watts, are the antagonists. The other characters that play a big role in Jeannette’s life are Lori, who is played by Olivia Kate Rice, Sadie Sink, and Sarah Snook, Brian, who is played by Iain Armitage, Charlie Shotwell, and Josh Barclay Caras, and Maureen, who is played by Eden Grace Redfield, Shree Crooks, and Brigette Lundy-Paine. Later in her life she married David, actor Max Greenfield, and then they divorced and she Married John, who was not mentioned in the movie.
I’ve introduced you to Shelby and M’Lynn already; now let me introduce you to Clairee Belcher, played by Olympia Dukakis. Clairee is a wealthy widow of the former mayor of Chinquapin Parish, is a refined southern lady and lover of gossip. Truvy Jones, played by Dolly Parton, is a small town “glamour technician”, gossip and reader of “Southern Hair Magazine”. She believes that “there is no such thing as natural beauty”. Many of the scenes in this movie take place in her beauty shop. Anelle Dupuy, played by Daryl Hannah, is a young woman straight out of beauty school and trying to start over in a new town after her husband mysteriously disappears, along with most of her belongings. Last but not least, we have Ouiser Boudreaux, played by Shirley MacLaine. She is abrasive, eccentric, rude and “richer than God”. She also happens to be my favorite character in the movie. The chemistry between these great actresses is what makes this movie one of the best, if not the best I’ve ever seen. When they are all together, it is movie magic! The dialogue and emotions that are so perfectly portrayed by all, will only leave you wanting more. Some of the gossip sessions are very dramatic and will bring you to tears, but some are so funny you’ll want to pee your pants. In order for the reader to understand this life lesson, authors implant different literary devices such as foreshadowing and conflict into their stories. Foreshadowing is the use of clues to suggest events that may occur later in the story, and conflict is when there is a struggle between two opposing forces. In Charles by Shirley Jackson and The Fun They Had by Isaac Asimov, the authors use foreshadowing and conflict to enhance the story's ultimate meaning and to keep readers absorbed in the story.

In the book Little Brother, written by Cory Doctorow, four teenagers Marcus, Darryl, Vanessa, more commonly known as Van, and Jose, live in San Francisco, California. These four students work to defend themselves against what they see as attacks by the government and schools on the Bill of Rights after a terrorist attack on the Oakland Bay Bridge in San Francisco, California. Little Brother portrays how surveillance has increased in San Francisco due to attacks and other illegal activities. As the story unfolds, surveillance increases in not only in San Francisco, but also throughout the entire world. Although Little Brother was published almost ten years ago, it includes 2007 surveillance technology, current day technology as well as possibilities of the future. This book shows how surveillance has increased throughout time and the many ways people devise to get around it.

In the two stories: “Charles” which was written by Shirley Jackson, an American writer, who’s prominence was in the late 1940’s through the early 60’s and “The Open Window” which was written by H. H. Munro, also known as “Saki,” who was born in the United Kingdom and made his mark in the early 1900’s, took fairly different approaches to establishing a similar suspense and ending to their stories. This could possibly be attributed to the era in which the stores were written or may be variations in the author’s personalities or even geographical location, but at final conclusion Charles was the better story. In the realistic fiction short story “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, there is a boy named Laurie who has some trouble with school. He makes trouble in the classroom and is disrespectful to his teacher. Instead of owning up to his mistakes, Laurie makes up a boy Charles and makes him do all the things Laurie did in the classroom. Jackson creates a theme of owning up to your mistakes and illustrates this theme through interesting word choice and unique point of view.
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry are two novels that are quite similar, due to their authors' use of style, character actions, and setting. Their techniques contribute to the conflict and the overall effect through an exploration of the theme of guilt and blame. Although the stories seem different, there are still some similarities in both while keeping the themes of guilt and/or blame present in either novel.
Because she is a sweet little girl, the fairytale is giving us messages that we should help our elders and we should be kind. When we hear queer, we do not say “Little Red Riding Hood” off the bat. In the articles from scholars there is a focus on different parts of “Little Red Riding Hood”, messages and how versions are seen as queer in the fairytale. In the article "A Wolf's Queer Invitation: David Kaplan's Little Red Riding Hood and Queer Possibility" by Jennifer Orme, she analyzes the word queer in "Little Red Riding Hood" which has many meanings to the different versions of the fairytale. “Queer reading, however, is all about straying from the path, particularly one built on binary oppositions between masculine and feminine, active and passive, and heterosexual and homosexual.”
Throughout time, mankind has forged stories and legends to explain the unknown. As years went along the stories and tall tales were passed down to each generation. Each recount of the inherited stories are always told differently, how the story was told usually depended on the person and their particular region of habitance. Thus leading to hundreds of different versions of a single story told throughout the world, written and told by different people. Not only are these stories told as pure entertainment, they serve as wise life lessons and set examples for children when they were eventually introduced to society. These stories are so prominent in human history that even to this day the same stories that were told to children centuries ago
