Eugenio Derbez is a Mexican actor, director, producer, and writer. He started his acting career at 12 years old and continues in the same career. He is well known for his outstanding personality and great acting. He is “one of the most influential creative forces in Latin America.” Eugenio’s TV shows and movies are not only popular in Mexico, but also in the United Stated through Univision. For over twenty years, he has won thousands of people’s hearts. As director and protagonist of Instructions Not Included, Eugenio creates outstanding transitions between humorous and emotional scenes. His life consists of being with different women all day. As portrayed in the movie, Valentin is very dishonest and irresponsible. As one of his affairs, Julia (Jessica Lindsey), claims her baby is Valentin’s, he has to raise the baby on his own. Julia simply leaves her child, Maggie, with Valentin. The audience can see how irresponsible the mother is as well. The journey begins. Valentin does not want to have any responsibility for the baby. Therefore, he and Maggie travel to Los Angeles in search of Julia. Valentin has in mind to find Julia, leave Maggie, and return to Acapulco. At this point in the movie, he is the same dishonest, irresponsible Valentin. Unfortunately, his plans do not go so well. Valentin and Maggie have to live in an apartment, which looks more like a toy store. His attitude toward keeping the baby begins to change. Eventually, Valentin ends up caring very much for his daughter. Although he does not know anything about kids, he does everything he possibly can to keep her happy. Valentin wants to make Maggie proud. Therefore, as much as he is afraid of heights, he manages to find a job as a stuntman. A joke in the film consists of the fact that the stuntman is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. He takes Maggie everywhere he goes. At some point, he is judged as a bad father as he allows Maggie to skip school often. Valentin has his own reason; she was diagnosed with an unknown sickness and he wants to spend as much time as possible with Maggie. Valentin and Maggie visit the doctor’s office very often in order for Valentin to receive his “shots”. In reality, Maggie is receiving the vitamins she needs for her health. Although Valentin has no experience, I believe he does an amazing job raising Maggie. Maggie has a father role figure to watch over her and protect her. At one point in my life, I did not.
