This essay is going to be a summary of From Clue to Dock’s chapter 7, The Kidnapping of Charlie Ross. The Ross family was a wealthy one which led to a pair of criminals to plan the abduction of Charlie and his older brother Walter, three years old and seven years old, respectively. It is a mystery till this date what happened to a little boy named Charlie Ross from Philadelphia.
This mystery first began on July 1st, when both Charlie and Walter could not be located anywhere that day. As the police were given notice to locate these wealthy boys on behalf of their father soon after a telegraph was sent all over the city. After many hours of searching Walter was found a long ways from his home, eight miles away.
When Walter was brought home he accounted the events that had lead up to his discovery in the country side. He remembered playing in front of the home as two men in their car invited Walter and Charlie inside. The car pulled off rapidly when the children climbed inside and soon after Walter began to fuss and shout. This lead for the abductors to become frustrated, knowing the older child would bring more issues, so they ditched him on a country road and continued on without Walter.
As this crucial piece to the puzzle was added by Walter, the police informed more officers to be on the lookout for the perpetrators. Meanwhile, Mr. Ross had issued a reward for any clues on the case by using ads. The police however, did not approve of Mr. Ross’ ads. They believed that for Mr. Ross to agree to pay for any information for the mystery would condone even more behaviors of such. The more optimistic approach to what happened to the young Charlie Ross is that nothing occurred to him and he got to live well into an elder age, not knowing the horrors that occurred to him at such a young age. On the other hand, the pessimistic approach to what happened to him was that Moster had ditched Charlie in a remote location while the bandits went out on what would be their final heist. Leaving Charlie to suffer and die alone. With whichever theory, what truly happened to Charlie Ross remains a mystery till this day.
Each clue that was added to puzzle of the Charlie Ross mystery was not enough to complete the whole puzzle in the end. The main piece needed to finally put an end to the suffering endured by the Ross family, as well as Charlie himself was blown to smithereens the moment that Bill Moster was killed.
Here is where Walter first goes to the first grade. When he got there it was suggested that he move on up to second grade because he could read on a second grade level. But his first grade teacher, Mrs.Dworkin Said it was a bad idea because he speak is very bad. On page 18 It states that it wasn’t until second grade that he realized that he had a speech problem. On page 18 around the 2nd paragraph he says that this boy named manual was making fun of his speech by saying “dabba, dabba, dabba” to his face. Walter then states that he stopped that dabba, dabba, dabba when he popped him in the face. Charles Lindbergh Jr was stolen from his house between eight and twelve pm on March 1st 1932. Later that night, he was hit on the forcefully hit on the head fracturing both sides of his skull and killing him instantly. Charles Lindbergh Jr was murdered by his father Charles Lindbergh. The whole kidnapping had been a hoax and Charles Lindbergh had murdered his son because of he had rickets, and other physical disabilities.
Two policeman, Sir Thomas Legge and Inspector Maine, discuss the perplexing Indian Island case. They have reconstructed much of what happened on Indian Island from diaries kept by various guests. It is clear to them that the murderer was not Blore, Lombard, or Vera. When they arrived, the police found the chair Vera kicked away to hang herself mysteriously set upright against the wall. We learn that Isaac Morris, who hired Lombard and Blore and bought the island in the name of U. N. Owen, died of an apparent sleeping-pill overdose the night the guests arrived on the island. The police suspect that Morris was murdered. The police know that the people of Sticklehaven were instructed to ignore any distress signals from the island; they were told that everything taking place on the island was part of a game being played by the wealthy owners of the island and their guests.
Charlie Gaines lives with his single mother in L.A. because his father abandoned him when he was an infant. Charlie is now 12 years old. Charlie’s friends call him Brain and for a good reason to.
After that, Walter started reading everything he could. His favorite thing to read at that time was comic books, but he read almost anything with words. One day in class he ws reading a comic book, his teacher saw him reading it, took it and then ripped it up. But in returnshe broght him a pile of books from her personal library. On that day is when the books took him.
To begin with, after sending a ransom note, the two men get a return message back from the father of the boy, stating that he will gladly take the boy from the men if they pay him 250 dollars. In his note, the father writes that if “you bring Johnny home and pay me two hundred and fifty dollars in cash, and I agree to take him off your hands. You had better come at night, for the neighbours believe he is lost, and I couldn’t be responsible for what they would do to anybody they saw bringing him back” (TRORC, pg. 14, par. 3). This is contrary to what the men originally want, as they are expecting payment, rather than having to pay the father of the boy. They were originally sure that they could get easy money out of the deal. They believe all of this based on the fact that the father, and not on the boy himself. In addition to getting a return message that dashes their hopes of getting easy money, the two men decide to return the boy and pay the 250 dollars, contrary to their original plan. After receiving the note, Sam, the other kidnapper, is angry at first, but his accomplice Bill says, “What’s two hundred and fifty dollars, after all? We’ve got the money. One more night of this kid will send me to a bed in Bedlam. Besides being a thorough gentleman, I think Mr. Dorset is a spendthrift for making us such a liberal offer. You ain’t going to let the chance go, are you?” (TRORC, pg. 15, par. 2). Sam eventually agrees with Bill, and they both return the boy and pay the 250 dollars. Their plan to make easy money has failed due to the fact they went on the original appearance of the boy and his father, and not the actual temperament of the boy. Along with returning the boy and paying 250 dollars, the two men make a very quick get away. Sam comments
At this time, Jake Hoover worked as a local hunter and was an experienced mountain man. When Hoover and Charlie met, they immediately realised they had an instant connection. They decided to share a cabin on the South Fork of Judith River. Hoover became Charlie's mentor and friend, he taught him about the Native American culture, survival in the West and much more. Eventually, Charlie started working for Hoover on his ranch. It was now 1882, and Charlie decided it was time to see his family again, so he packed some things and said goodbye to Hoover. When Charlie finally got back to Oak Tree he discovered that his family was quite happy with his new career as a rancher and they had convinced Charlie's cousin James Fulkerson to go back with him. This was initially a lot to for Charlie to take in, he now had someone he had to take care of along with himself. But, only 2 weeks after arriving in Billings, James died of “mountain fever” on May 27th, 1883. ("Charles Marion Russell - The Complete Works") Charlie Russell decided it was about time for him to retire. It could have been the recent death of his cousin that set off this sudden decision, but Charlie had been a cowboy for 11 years, and had completed his cowboy dream. Now he wanted to become a full time artist.("Charles M. Russell") It wasn't until the winter of 1886-1887 that Charlie’s art career truly started. When a friend from Oak Hill asked how the winter was in the wild wild west.Charlie responded with a small letter featuring a boney and starving bull being stalked by wolves. After seeing this letter, Charlie’s friend featured in in the window of his downtown store. Charlie Russell started to become a common name in Saint Louis, and people sent letters to him asking what the west was like hoping to get a letter in return. While they were on the island they killed the momma sow, murdered Piggy , and stalked and tried to kill Ralph. The boys killed a momma sow who was feeding her babies & did not care because they thought it was a game. In the second paragraph, one of the boys who was now a savage threw a rock on Piggy while he was making a speech after Ralph & Jack had just fought. In the third paragraph, the boys tried to hunt & kill one more boy, Ralph, Ralph was the leader of the group until Jack took control & now Jack’s only goal is to kill Ralph. Ultimately, Walter does a wonderful job of bringing together multiple different stories and making them intertwine in various ways. It shows readers that even though one does have their own story, other stories of others lives, show up and interview with theirs. No one is ever, truly, alone. This idea is painted beautifully throughout the novel and shows that even though you may believe that your life is a ruin and you are all alone, something or someone can come into your life and, for just a moment, make it beautiful again.
Once Ralph realizes there is a Naval Officer to the boys’ rescue, he gets unfathomably upset. He realizes that his childhood is over, he has experienced far too much trauma to ever be able to act like a child again. All of the other boys are unsure of how to feel. They stay very quiet to collect their thoughts. The Naval Officer asks the boys’ questions about the events that happened on the island. In conclusion the killing of the mama pig and the death of simon and the hunt for ralph shows the boys loss of innocence.The lost of innocence begam when they hunted down and killed a peaceful mama pig. With any given problem there is a solution; however, and the question is “how does one come about to that solution”? Extremely high intelligence level, keen observation, creative imagination and sensitivity to details are just some of the qualities that Holmes possesses. In the process of solving mysteries, there is always a borderline between mere guessing, a coincidence, and a scientific approach that Holmes calls deductive reasoning. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1902 novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Dr. Mortimer seeks advice from Holmes as he explains the curse that has been plaguing the Baskerville family. With the power of deduction, Holmes realizes that Mr. Stapleton is actually a Baskerville descendant and has been planning to get rid of the other members of the family to claim the family fortune. Conan Doyle tells the reader what their mind is capable of doing by incorporating Holmes through his novels as he uses observation, deduction and knowledge in solving his cases.
