Our group has chosen to focus on one of the Grand Theorists. The theorist we chose is Florence Nightingale. She based many of her concepts on the principle that every human being has “cleanliness, fresh air, sanitation, comfort, and socialization were necessary to healing.” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p.132). During the reparative process any or all of these items are interrupted. Many of Nightingale’s notes and letters were written long before the metaparadigm concepts of human, environment, health, and nursing were labeled as such. Nightingale’s notes on nursing expounded on each of her principles in great detail so much so that they are still referred to and applied to modern day nursing practices. Health Care Associated Infections (HAI’s) are continuing to escalate. They were also recognized by Nightingale during the Crimean War though not labeled as such. HAI’s originally referred to those infections associated with admission in an acute care setting, but the term now applies to infections acquires in the continuum of settings (long term care, ambulatory or home settings). Most HAI’s are preventable and are an undesired outcome. They truly determine quality of patient care, an adverse event, and a patient safety issue. Leininger stated that “a learned humanistic and scientific profession and discipline that is focused human care phenomena and activities to assist, support, facilitate, or enable individuals or groups to maintain or regain their well-being (or health) in culturally meaningful and beneficial ways, or to help people face handicaps or deaths” (McEwan, 2014, pg. 43). What does this all mean? First and foremost, anyway that we can assist in the patient’s well-being is as simple as basic handwashing, clean and sterile environments, and warm environment is simple, correct?
