How Short stories give a new dimension to life.
Short stories and fables give essential insight on life and convey a deeper understanding of the basic fundamental and intellectual lessons of life. Over the ages many stories and fables have been told from generation to generation to help people understand and grow intellectually/mentally to live a life which is one with yourself and everyone in relation to you. One such story which is deep in its morals is The Giraffe by Mauro Senesi. This story portrays a strong message, and when I read this book I was deeply affected emotionally as well as intellectually. This short story has explained a very important message to society which is there in all humans sub-consciously.
The giraffe conveys a strong message about how humans have an inability both emotionally and intellectually to deal with any kind of change. In this story a giraffe was brought in to the town by a merchant, lots of the people in the town were scared and frightened by the giraffe entering in the town. The people living there did not want to keep “the beast” in their town, showing their intolerance towards anything that changes or that is new. The intolerance was to such extremes that he people were ready to kill the animal, “We 'll have to kill the giraffe” (Senesi 30). The policeman in this short story was so much in an illusion, deluded by his emotions of fear and anger that he killed the Giraffe for entering the town, “the policeman who came and said, "If you don 't take it away, I 'll kill it with my revolver" (29). These emotions that were shown reflect upon how the mind set in our society today is absorbed in ego, blocking the ability to understand situations from each perspective. The policemen is great example of that, the policeman could not understand the Giraffe’s feelings and thoughts from its perspective, due to his incapability of understanding others because of his own ego. People are often self-deluded that they are always right and whatever they are doing is always right, but that is not the case, it is more of a self-illusion created by them. Furthermore this story helped me understand that emotions and thoughts work in parallels, controlling and broadening emotions or thoughts will help strengthen the intellect and reduce the fear and anger.
